Namiki Maki-E - Disappointment With A Cap

stanv

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have just received a pen. Lowest Namiki series. Costs ~ 600 USD.

I really do have disappointment how cap seats on the barrel.

When I finish writing and post cap back to pen to close pen, cap always goes slanting.

Cap is heavy. And when you take the pen you see that something is wrong.

Then you see that the cap seats bad. Please see photos.

With this pen I cannot fill happiness, because it gives wrong feeling.

Cap seats shaky, no matter how tight I screw it back.

There is nothing wrong with seller.

He sold me completely new pen.

He is from USA, I am from Europe.

Pen works well, I filled it up.

Seller did all perfectly, sent me the pen with USPS express.

I do not want to solve this problem with seller, we are on different parts of the Earth.

It is problem of Namiki.

Why seller should suffer in current situation ?

I left positive feedback on Ebay.

He done all well.

Pen writes well, etc,,, but cap - has bad fixation.

I think this is design problem in this series.

I just ask other FPN members, do they have such problem ?

This is one of those things you run into sometimes. I'm going to guess the cap to barrel threads are single start?

When I was using taps and dies and depending on the section lip to but up against the inside of the cap shoulder to tighten the cap, I would sometimes get this. I see this with my pens very rarely now since I'm cutting 4 start threads.

When you put the cap on the pen, does the picture always line up the same way?

That's so the picture lines up the same every time. That's just a design issue. Is it wonky enough so that you notice it when holding the pen sideways?

Probably every one of them will be like that or similar. Some maybe not as bad.

Pretty sure Namiki will take care of such a high end pen without asking any money. Send an email to them and they should be able to help you. Attach the pictures in the email too.

This is one of the problems with international buying, it is difficult to get the pen back to the seller.

In most countries the seller is the one who sold you the pen and who should warrant the good working of the item, in this case the pen. He should repair or replace your pen. It is his business to make sure that he gets his own back from the importer or from the factory.

Now you are on the other side of the globe, this is a bit difficult, and you could also use the warranty the manufacturer offers.

But, as watch_art says, it could be that this is inherent to the model.

Perhaps you could best make a picture of the problem and email that to Pilot/Namiki and explain your problem. They can tell you if they can repair the problem or if this is just as these pens are.

Goodluck

I completely understand your disappointment. Before you allow this to completely spoil your enjoyment of the pen take the excellent advice you've received and contact Pilot/Namiki directly.

This is also the risk we take when we buy something without seeing it before we buy - which, I think, many of us do because there aren't shops local to us.

Also, I use it daily, but nib quickly gets dry with cap on.

It is hard to start writing.

I use J. Herbin 1670 anniversary ink (red) and nibs covers with flakes at one day with cap on. I think cap doesn't prevent air flow.

My Pelikan pen allow me to use this ink without flakes on nib.

I can leave Pelikan pen for a few days and nib after that is clean without any flakes on it. Namiki nib gets flakes in half of a day (

I have contacted Namiki, but still do not have any reply from them.

I have received answer from namiki.com.

They do not take care for pens from other countries except from USA.

So, maybe some have emails for consumer service at Japan ?

It is very funny story (((

Hi Stan

That video perfectly shows something that is definitely not right.

I suspect there is an inner cap that sits loose...

After 2 days of usage above pen.

Ink: J. herbin 1670 anniversary red

I know that this ink is exigent to pen.

But I do not have such problem with Pelikan or Lamy.

In regards to the bold, That would be more a property of the ink, and not something Namiki would control since the content of the feed/body/etc wouldn't be interacting with the ink, or should not (as noted you didn't have the issue with Pelikan or Lamy). Besides the only action they would take in regards to the ink is recommend that you use only Pilot or Iroshizuku inks.

Yes, I did.

And received reply:

Мы эти ручки в Россию не поставляем, поэтому и сервиса никакого у нас нет.

In English it sounds like : We do not deliver this pens to Russia. We do not provide services for it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
