Hi Algester,

In my opinion, the uni Mitsubishi Kuru Toga pencils are the best mechanical pencils in the World. Good choice.

It is hard to tell but the name of the pencil is on the actual packaging is "KURU TOGA", not "Kurotoga" as you spell it. However, many times resellers spell the name Kurutoga; as one word. So try both spellings when searching.

Kuru Toga in Japanese is "Twist and Turn". I think this reflects on the mechanism that rotates the lead as you write, thereby keeping lead wear even and eliminating flat spots..

1. Try going to the uni Mitsubishi Homg Kong home page. I don't see a list of local sellers, but you can give them a ring and ask where to buy the pencils in Hong Kong:

I can't read Traditional Chinese, but this was on the uni homepage in English:

Address: UNIT 8 20/F HONG MAN IND CTR 2 HONG MAN ST, CHAI WAN, Hong Kong
Contact Person: Office Manager
Tel: (852) 25151028
Fax: (852) 25573854
Website: www.uniball.com.hk

2. These folks in Hong Kong sell the high-grade and roulette Kuru Togas, but lately they seem to be out of stock. I have purchased from them many times in the past with zero problems. Try sending them an Email. They may know another store in Hong Kong that carries what you need. They are very friendly.

3. Try doing a search for Kuru Toga or Kurutoga on ebaY. Set the results to show 200 items per page, then let your browser search "Hong Kong". I got a hand full of hits for the high-grade or roulette from Hong Kong on the first page.

Some Hong Kong sellers say they won't ship to Mainland China or Hong Kong. Don't believe it. Contact the seller and you can probably make an arrangement for postal delivery or pick-up if you are in Hong Kong.

Here's one random result from a Hong Kong stationary seller "RICKYIP SHOP": The seller says he doesn't ship to Hong Kong, but contact him and ask. Or try another HKG seller..

And here's the RICKYIP SHOP ebaY store with lots of stationary stuff:

Remember, this is just one example of a Hong Kong ebaY seller that has the pencils you want. There are plenty more.

Let us know where you eventually got your Kuru Togas.

Good Luck, David in Jakarta

I got mine from Commercial Press, they are everywhere. You can also visit CN Square at Yau Ma Tei, they are one of the biggest stationery shop at HK.

Anyway Kuru Toga is very common here in HK if you are coming here i suggest avoid online shop and go to Comm Press and get one (or two).

ok back from the trip here's what I found out the Kuru-toga is only available in alpha-gel and the basic version in Hong Kong, I'm thinking uniball HK might have not yet thought up of expanding the product line yet so if one were to look for Hi-grade and roulette it is best to have it imported or get it while your in Japan, (where options are more vast with the Promecha by ohto, Delguard by Zebra, Kuru-togas by Uni-ball)

in that sense the ordinary and Alpha-gel Kuru-toga will be found everywhere in Hong Kong as long as there's a stationary section.

so as a compromise I just got me 2 basic kuru-togas .3 and .5 and then a lot of lead shop CN square

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
