Lidth's Jay - Kingdom Note

Some time ago Tinjapan send some Sailor LE ink to Sisnistral1 who, in turm, sent the rest of the samples to me. Thank you both of you :) So first let's look at Kingdom Note's Bird series:

These inks are sold in Japan in Kingdom Note stationery shop. They can also be purchased from on-line sellers but to be honest I find the price (+/- 40 $) inacceptable. This statement doesn't mean I don't enjoy using Sailor's limited inks. Unhappily I enjoy doing it a lot and when the sample's over I feel sad :)

The full line consists of five colors:

  1. Lidth's Jay
  2. Mandarin Duck
  3. Peregrine Falcon
  4. Pheasant
  5. Toki

Lidth's Jay (Garrulus Lidthi) is simply stunning. I'm not blue ink addict but if I had to limit myself to three blue inks, Lidth's Jay would be among them. I could tell it's became my favourite ink and this few mililiters of ink made great couple with my St Dupont Ellipsis with broad nib. If I manage to grab this ink for reasonable price , I'll do it without hesitation. It's stunning. Not only the color suits my taste really well, the properties are great. To be honest usually I'm not that interested in inks properties as dry time, waterproofness, lightfastness, unless - of course - the ionk behaviour is outrageous. I'm interested in color and shading. But I like lubricated inks and Sailor knows really well how to prepare inks that are wet and make the pen glide on the page.

Comparison (scribbles made with Kaweco on good quality paper)

By looking at scribbles I would pick Blue Velvet but Sailor just feels better during writing and it has something scan can't really catch.

Nice shading.. and I can see sheen in the scan... It does look lovely... I am not a Blue fan either... (I do love Blue-Blacks).. and yes, this one looks nice.

This looks brighter than the Mushroom Blue.. (Trametes Versicolor)

Interestingly, in the comparison pic it looks identical to the Akkerman blue.

Have you ever done a computer analysis of the Akkerman?

This blue is too light for my tastes though. (the Diamine Regency is more up my alley)

I bought a bottle of this hoping it would be the color that you show in your scans, but in my pens it leans to the green side of blue. Has anyone else noticed this variation?

I'm anxious to get my hands on some Diamine Blue Velvet, but it appears to be sold out everywhere. Anyone know of a source in the US?

What you say is surpring :) It's really clear blue. Pheasant is green but this, intriguing.

The box and bottle labels are also a lighter blue than in your photo. I wonder if there may be some batch variation

I am curious, so I ordered another bottle to see if it is different. I don't dislike the ink I have, so if it turns out the same, I haven't lost anything. I really need to get a scanner. Are the Canon flatbeds good?

jmccarty3 - there are better scaners on the market but Canon flatbeds offer good price / quality ratio. I like this scanner although there's one issue. It really has (even after calibration) problem with scanning reds and reddish browns. It makes reds pinkier than uin reality and reddish brown tend to look like beets.

Great stuff!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
