8 1/2 hours into the new year and my total is 0 pens. That's pretty good restraint, I think.

I must confess I came close to buying a Parsons Essential a few minutes ago ...

I haven't bought any pens in the ten hours and forty minutes that this year has lasted so far. I do have one coming, but it was ordered last year. In fact, it arrived last year, but turned out to have nib problems, and back it went. The seller is supposed to send me a new one once they get the return.

The goal for this year is to reduce my total number of pens, selling more than I buy. Heck, I'll give some away to people I know if I can get them interested.

2014- 3: Pilot Varsity, Parker Sonnet, and Pilot Metropolitan... and few other that I cannot recall.

2015- 0: Today is New Year's Day, so none. I may buy a Montblanc later today though.

In January this year I had no pens (apart from the nice gold-banded Swan I left behind in France). In February I bought for £5 a Jackdaw in a charity shop.

Now I have over 60, and the corpses of at least another thirty - and I have sold at least forty or so.

It's VERY bad here... ANd there are 10 propelling pencils as well...

Oh my Cob, have you set up a triage area?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

What's a "Triage Area?"

I just looked back; I have sold 75 pens on ebay this year, I have given away six or seven pens and sold about another ten privately.

Jolly unhealthy! Still there are four more up on eBay right now!

I haven't finished the 2014 tally yet, but it looks like something in the range of 140. The majority were Wahl Eversharp pencils and pens from the '20s with some Conklins and Parkers thrown in. Only 8-10 modern pens.

I didn't count, but the number is probably between 20 to 30 pens and mechanical pencils, mostly bought at estate sales and flea markets.

I didn't even make it a day - bought my first new pen of the year yesterday. Ugh. What's wrong with me? Now I'm up to 10 pens and I have worked hard to keep that number down. A few will have to go. 10 is too many.

The pen ban didn't last long . . .

I bought my first pen of 2015 while drinking coffee on New Year's Day. A Pelikan M205. This would be my 5th M2xx pen. I bought the other 4 last year, my very first piston style pens. I guess I like these little birds. :)

2014 was my year of obsessiveness. I bought 18 pens and sold 8 and gave one away. Sold 4 cars and bought 4 cars. Bought 3 guns sold 3 guns. Bought 7 bottles of ink gave away 4.

So this year I plan to be thankful for and enjoy what I have and keep buying to a minimum! So far so good, no new pens, cars, guns, ink etc. for 2015. Haven't even been to the grocery store!

Thank you; of course I could have looked that up myself but I am so damned lazy!

As for ill patients, my pens are largely healthy; the rest I'm afraid will have to go to Dignitas!

Delta Fusion 82 1.1 stub

Marlen Aleph

2 Lamy Al-Stars 1.1mm and B nibs

I am choosing to refrain from further epic purchases for a while. In an alternate universe I purchased a Nakaya Decapod, Visconti Wall Street LE in Burgundy with a a B stub nib, a Delta oversize Oro and Dolce Vita, a Conid bulk filler, M1000...... You see where this is going.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
