Sakia_Madding really liked this ink, I was not wowed by it. Call me hard bitten, but I am...hard bitten. I thought it looked a lot like Noodler's Blue and/or Akkerman Shocking Blue and so I wondered why I had gone through all that trouble to obtain it. Oh, well. I thought Akkerman was far higher sheening than Sapphire. So I am selling it and cherishing my bottles of Akkerman and Noodler's. It was fun to find out, though.

I tried this early on in my Sailor ink journey, and while I still think it is super pretty, it is no longer the reigning blue champ (in my opinion). Having said that, I still like it a lot, and never noticed it to feather. Sorry you had such a bad time with this ink!

Oh, it wasn't a bad time. I am glad I got to experience it. I suppose that I, like you, have had a good deal of experience with inks and have gotten more discerning and have "seen it all" so something has to be pretty WONDERFUL to make us stop and stare at it. :P

Which ink is your current blue champion? :)

Yeah, there's a set more than just one reigning champ. Sorry Fabienne, since I know you're not a fan, but I still LOVE yama-dori. It's my top contender and has been since 2010.

But under Yama-dori is SankoDo Port Blue and Ozone Blue (which on some papers has a really neat sheen, it's like pink rather than red). This is Port Blue; I haven't yet uploaded the pictures for Ozone Blue.

I also love the two Kingdom Note mushroom ones, both are really pretty. But the SankoDo ones are probably the top ones for now.

Here's Entoloma virescens. The Trametes Versicolour I haven't finished a review for yet.

Oops! found a quick shot of just a small amount of both!

Onago-iro About To Leave is also super cute.

Still, Bung Box 4B is an old favourite, too. As are Maruzen Eternal Blue and Ishida-bungu Hakodate Twilight.

I guess it depends on what you want - dark or light, blue-black of closer to turquoise. :)

I am definitely more into Dark Blues (Blue-Blacks).... but from your list of favorites... I will totally agree to Yamadori and Maruzen Blue.

Most of the rest have too much purple in them... (not all, but most.. ) ;)

You have the knack with Yama Dori. I could not get it to shine, shade, and sheen like you do.

I just sent you these two sheets.

Sheen is (as Saskia warned me) very paper dependent.

Here is the ink on Tomoe River.

After those beautiful photos of the Port Blue, I'm excited to see what the Ozone Blue looks like! :)

This thread is deeply disappointing. I was looking for a discussion of fish-based ink... :wallbash:

... or failing that beef, perhaps some chats on statistics ? :yikes:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
