New to this forum. I recently purchased a Lamy Al-Star aluminum fine point fountain pen with a converter. My plan was to use this for lettering comics. I've tried Noodler's bulletproof ink with the converter; initially this looked like a grey wash, but starting over after shaking the bottle fixed this. However, Noodler's might not be the optimal ink for the use I have in mind.

I have a few Kuretaki Sumi sable and nylon brush pens -- this admission is probably off topic. I've used converters with those. Lately though I've been using Rapidograph technical pens.

Then why am I here if I'm only a pragmatic fountain pen user, as opposed to a dyed-in-the-wool aficionado, or a connoisseur for whom money is no object? Because I hope to find out about fountain pens and inks suitable for lettering comics, and also fountain pens suitable for sketching--those might be different. A friend just informed me about the Sailor "Fude De Mannen" fountain pen, which seems suitable for sketching. Since he has referred me to this forum over the years, I'm entering the forums in earnest, after joining FPN apparently in March 2012 and doing nothing here since then.

Thanks for reading!

I recently bought the Sailor Nagahara Naginata Togi fountain pen, brand new in the box. I don't care for it much at all. I hope you have better luck with the Sailor you want to sketch with.

I'm not sure I can answer that. Lots of people on this forum say this pen of mine is the be all, end all of Sailors. I greatly prefer my Montblancs and my Mabie Todds, though, and not a little! : )

Welcome !

I don't know anything about "lettering comics". What do you need such ink(s) to do ?

Are you aware that your Al-star has available five easily changeable nibs ?

Hi, nice you came in to say hello. You've been a member for some time, I see.

The Fude de mannen is not a pen, but a nib, and you can order it in many pens.

It is a nib with an upturned nose, and depending on your angle of writing you get a different line.

I suppose you could do great in doing lettering with it, if you want effects.

Or perhaps have a look at the Naginata Cross nib from sailor, sort of a zoom-nib.

Sailor makes good nibs, but not all are suitable for everybody. I myself bought a music nib from them, which I regret, it does not fit my writing style, too wet a nib.

Enjoy our forum

Last month I bought a Sailor Nagahara Naginata Togi, brand new and in the box, and I detest it. Writing with this thing feels like I'm scratching paper with a needle. I'm still kicking myself over this purchase and keep telling myself I could've gotten a nice Montblanc or any other fountain pen on eBay for my money. : (

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
