Lamy Set On Massdrop

I ordered the latest Lamy massdrop (a Safari and a mechanical pencil) in Charcoal, with a fine nib. I'm excusing this additional pen purchase because I'm going to give it (along with Lamy ink) to my apprentice when he completes his "graduation" in January. He's been admiring my fountain pens at work, so I thought I'd gift him the pen and pencil set as a little congratulation gift. Sorely tempted to get one for myself but HOW many pens does one person need? Although I use and enjoy each one, I must say.

That is a very nice price for the set, and you can get almost any color (other than limited editions, of course) or nib size, which is cool. I wish they included the Lamy Vista, though, lol. Your apprentice (in what field? (not that it is any of my business! :P)) will be very happy!

As far as how many pens one needs, I thought that had to do with how much storage you have available. If you have empty slots in your storage container, doesn't that mean you need to keep buying pens to fill it?!? And then when someone gives you a new storage container, you need to buy more pens, and.... Isn't that the way it is supposed to go? lol - You obviously have more will power than I do.....

We're financial advisors. He was admiring my pens (in particular, a TWSBI) but he hasn't seen the Lamys yet. And since he writes a lot of notes in both pencil and pen, I thought the charcoal set would be really nice for him. (I'd like to own it myself, a good way to judge a gift.) I think he'll enjoy these. I use a FP now to sign all the paperwork I have to sign, and to write thank you notes and sympathy cards (professional duties.) The FP's are much more elegant for note writing. I am going to throw in a bottle of Lamy black ink, too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
