I recently purchased my first fountain pens a few months ago, and now I want ALL THE PENS.

I am finding it a little odd, as I used to love digital tech, and still do I guess - but privacy/security worries me, so prefer paper now. Even for mundane things. Use a Leuchtturm1917 dotgrid A5 notebook, and a Pilot Metropolitan Fine from Goulet Pens; Bullet Journal style.

My wife uses a Fine and Medium Pilot Metro at work (she is a legal executive) which gets her a few looks, and she loves the turquoise ink we currently have (Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku). Mainly for signing things, as most stuff is computer based with paper copies. She is far less fanatical about pens and notebooks than me though.

I am wondering if my enthusiasm will dull with time, at the moment I am just wanting to try a few more of the cheaper pen options and various inks, and I can't see that getting less.

I ended up getting the pens due to checking here and Goulet, knowing nothing about fountain pens the Pilot Metro seemed a good place to start, and it works well.

Anyways, I'll keep looking around for a bit :)

Glad to have you part of the FPN Community. Some would say we are enablers; others fanatics; others addicted; and some, would say that you have been bitten by the 'pen bug.' Whichever it is, you will find delight in using these wonderful writing instruments.

Welcome !

Luxury and aesthetics do not add to the function of a fountain pen. A thorough flushing and rinsing before

first ink will enhance the function of a new pen. I consider a pen to write well, if it writes continuously for the

entire contents of the ink reservoir. I enjoy seeking such pens among the "budget priced" pens.

Jinhao 599 and Jinhao x500 are two such bargains.

Write with joy.

Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Greetings and welcome. I disagree with Sasha Royale - "Luxury and aesthetics do not add to the function of a fountain pen." A part of the function of a fountain pen is as hand jewelry. Something pleasant to look at and contemplate, whether performing its primary function, or not.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
