Finally! Estie Related Sumgai Deal!

So I now have three Esties: a blue SJ, a red SJ and a copper LJ. I've kind of been looking for more nibs for them and stumbled across the fact that Osmiroid nibs fit Estie sections. Did some digging on Ebay and lo and behold, I scored a sumgai deal:

Osmiroid 65 with six italic nibs for 16.49 shipped!

Didn't care about the pen all that much, I just wanted the nibs. But its a solid looking lever filler in pretty good condition so I think I may just restore it. Sac is actually really pliable and springy...if not a bit dirty. Tempted to fill it with water and see if any leaks develop...

Pretty happy with this score! And in the same day I also got three Estie nibs: a 2668, 2442 Falcon and a 2968 broad for peanuts...

The Osmiroid nibs write really smooth. The box set came with sizes ranging from XF to Broad, so I think I'm set on italics for awhile. Not bad getting 6 nibs and a pen for the price of one 9xxx series Estie nib!

Whoa! What a great buy! Have fun with them :)

I am wondering how the Osmiroid nibs look on an Estie :P

Score. I'm using an Os for my Estie nibs until I get the Esties resacced. Not as fancy on the outside, but solid pens.

OK, here are some pics of one of the nibs on my copper LJ.

Even though the Esties are trimmed in stainless steel, I think this looks OK...

I haven't tried all of my nibs, but one of my Estie nibs didn't want to go all the way into the section on the Osmiroid, so it must be a pretty tight fit.

Congrats on your scores! Those will be fun to use.

Life's too short to use crappy pens.  -carlos.q

Indeed they are...I might have stayed up an hour past bed time last night just writing away with the medium, lol. Really digging italic nibs and the line variation they give. I had a Pilot 78g in broad stub that wrote similar to this but it wanted a very specific angle to write smoothly. I eventually decided to sell it because it wasn't a good fit for my natural grip...its kind of been in the back of my head to get another italic or stubbed nib, but I haven't pursued it because of my Estie fever. This kills two birds with one stone!! More nibs for the Esties AND italics! I could probably leave all my other pens at home today and that's sayin something, LOL.

I've been eyeing those italics, too. I love me some italics! Please, post pics, and maybe some size comparisons? Pretty please?

I will. Mrs. Sirgilbert357 has declared tonight "Present Wrapping" night, LOL, so not sure how much time I'll have, but I will attempt to get a comparo up.

The sizes are:

Extra Fine

Fine

Medium-Fine

Medium (x2)

Broad

I've been using the pen as a nib holder and dipping the nibs I want to play with...

Nice haul. I've seen a single Osmiroid nib listed for what you paid for the entire set (mind you, it keeps getting *relisted* at regular intervals...).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Yeah, that's why I freaked out when I saw it. I emailed the seller to ask what nibs it came with since you couldn't tell from the pic and she replied with the sizes and that it came from an estate sale and only the broad nib showed signs of use. Indeed, the other nibs were all mint with not a hint that they had ever seen ink. The broad nib had some dried ink in the feed, so I soaked it over night and its much better now. I'll try to do a dip test of each nib tonight and post up a writing sample pic comparing them all.

And the ink sac may not be original to the pen...I'm not sure, but it looks an awful lot like the Pli-glass sacs that Parker used...hoping I can just get one of those to restore it.

OK, here is a writing sample of each nib. They were dipped in Pelikan Edelstein Topaz ink. Ironically, the "Fine" appears to be about the same as the medium-fine...or is it fine-medium? Anyway, not much difference between them for some reason. Of course, dipping the nibs means the wetness was all over the map; these results would probably be a bit more accurate if I could fill the pen with ink and actually write with it normally. Anyway, on to the pics:

I threw in a few of my other pens for comparison purposes...

I think the Extra Fine is almost too fine...and the Broad is ridonkulous...but again, there was a lot of ink flowing when I used the broad...I think the medium is my current favorite. That's what I was using in the copper LJ earlier too and I wrote quite a few pages with it. I just love the line variation you get with these nibs!

Oh, I'm lusting after that Extra-Fine now! I'd be curious to actually look at the nibs and/or the measurements for the fine and the fine/medium -- I bet the difference is subtle, but that can be significant for people who write as small as I do.

Thank you so much for the pictures!

You're welcome for the pics; sorry that I don't have tools exact enough to measure the nibs for you. I really think the fine needs to be used installed on the pen instead of dipped...it was just writing funky, as you can see...

Oh, and I cleaned the ink sac out today and rinsed it out really well. Didn't see any leakage, so I dared to fill it with ink and have been writing with it all day with no issues or leaks. I'm pretty stoked about that!!

It's great when these nibs turn up. I was lucky enough to score a set of 12 new Osmiroid Rola nibs in a lot of pen parts not long ago. I've been using the broads as they suit my writing style (such as it is). It may be a sacrilege but I've just put one of the Rola broad nibs into an Estie section and sac and installed them into an English 'Unique' barrel and cap that has a mauve marbled pattern. It's filled with Diamine Ancient Copper ink. A Frankenpen yes, but a rather stylish one and nothing that can't easily be reversed. Certainly better than a bunch of bits and pieces sitting in a parts drawer.

Oh man how I want like half of those nibs!! LOL. If you weren't in a country that would make shipping prohibitive, I'd beg to buy some of those mediums off of you!

Not sacrilege at all, that pen looks great!! I'd rock that with pride...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
