A Terrible Tragedy Hath Befallen Me Ink.

If only I would have actually closed the lid rather than resting it atop the bottle. I'll post a pic of my floor later. post-117936-0-82652000-1418862837_thumb.jpg

Think on the bright side: at least all your inks haven't been hit by SITB. Now that would be a real tragedy! :yikes:

What ink?

It was a new 95% full bottle of Noodlers Black Swan in English Roses. Its a pity really I much enjoyed that ink. I also much enjoyed the pants I was wearing which are now Ink splattered.

D.ick (I think) suggested soaking the stain in milk or cream. Dab, not rub, the liquid out after soaking and repeat.

Fuhgeddaboudit! It'll NEVER come out. Think into the future, lemons => lemonade

Get a couple more bottles of BSER, take the pants and an shirt and soak them both in the ink. Make a suitable hat that looks like a Noodlers top and you can go trick-or-treating as a bottle of BSER. No one will ever guess. If they do you've found an ink soul-mate

It is too late, but here is what I do when I reink the pen.

  • I do my ink loading in the bathroom, where I have running water to wash, and linolium floor that is relatively easy to clean. If I had a stainless steel sink in my kitchen I would use that.
  • I use a large baking/cookie tray to do my ink refilling in. So spills are contained.
  • The ink bottle is located away from the sides of the tray. So spills are contained by distance to the side of the tray.
  • The ink bottle is the farthest object in the tray. This is so that I do NOT reach over and behind the bottle, where my arm could knock over the ink bottle when I reach over it. But it is not so far that I have to reach over too far, as that creates another problem.
  • The bottle of ink is stabilized to the degree possible.
Tall bottle like Noodler's becomes a problem as they are more easily knocked over, and will splash farther. 2-sided tape, clay, Lego bottle holder, etc.
Ink vials are easily knocked over. I put ink vials into a heavy glass ink well to prevent them from being knocked over.
  • All the prep work is done BEFORE the ink bottle is opened.
As soon as the pen is inked, the ink bottle is securely closed. Then I do the other stuff like wipe off the pen, and cap it, etc.
These 2 steps keep the ink bottle open for the least amount of time. Thus minimizing the window of opportunity for accidents.
  • I will also sometimes wear rubber gloves, to keep the ink from getting on my hands. Some reinking is just messier than others.

  • When I use my dip pen, the dip pen ink is kept in a small cooking tray next to my writing pad.
    Again to contain any spills.

And this is one reason why I fill/re-fill from sample vials. (Ink is transferred from bottles to sample vial via syringe, nothing goes back into the bottle, not even the syringe if it dips into the sample vial during filling).

Most of my bottles spend their lives in their original cardboard box tucked away into the ink tote.

Look at it this way, you can now say "been there, done that".

Oh man... I'm so sorry.

Looks like quite a bit of spread on the carpet. Not so fountain pen friendly! Is that a dorm carpet?

You should take advantage of the opportunity and put some white tape as an outline of a dead body and put one of them numbered markers next to it. Place another next to the pen, uncapped. Make it look like a crimescene. Also a great way to avoid blame by your SO if you have any, or a mom or dad.

Thank you for the tip on the baking tray ac12! I'm very paranoid about spilling and have been looking for something to use just in case I do have a spill while transferring ink into sample vials.

Edit: I was just thinking -- has anyone tried oxiclean on ink stains before? I'm obsessed with the gel stick which I have used with success on everything from oil and grease to dried blood stains. I have not tried it on an ink stain though (I am knocking on wood as a write this and hoping I don't jinx myself and end up needing it tonight :P)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
