Old Classic Pens With Z50 Nibs?

PDW

Recommended Posts

I love using old, classic pens - they give me a feeling of a connection with history, with something old. But my experience with Lamy Z50 nib-equipped pens is (as of today) better than with anything else I currently own.

I have an old-style Lamy Pur which happily purrs over the paper with its EF nib, and it occurred to me to wonder whether there are any other out-of-production Lamy models which have the Lamy 'standard' nib fitting. So - beyond colour limited editions and minor changes like the Safari over its lifetime so far - is there anything Lamy aficionados can recommend for me?

I'm not positive if the earliest Safaris used the Z50 nib (I am going to presume they did), but around the time the Safari was introduced is when Lamy started to standardize many of their nib-pen combinations to accept the Z50 nib and its gold version as well. None of the pens from the 80s, as best as I can tell, used a nib identical to the Z50, though the CP1 nibs and the Profil line nibs were early versions of that slide-on/slide-off design. The pens like the 25P and 26P used nibs that were steel versions of the Lamy 2000 nib, and allow interchangeability between the pens if one so chooses (and a long list of other pens prior to that, as well, like the Ratio lineup, the later versions of the 27, and the 99).

Take a look at the 1997 catalogue for some other options of older (but not quite 'vintage') pens that have a decent chance of taking the Z50 nib, though be aware that I don't own any of these pens from that era, so I can not positively confirm all cases... The CP1 (later version, 80's version nibs are different), Linea, ST, abc, and Logo are options to keep an eye open for. I have been on the lookout for a decent UNIC fountain pen, but those came with a 14k nib, and there is a good chance it is the older style and no compatible with the Z50 nib... But I haven't seen one first hand to verify that. Perhaps someone can post about that here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
