It looks okay so far and maybe a good buy, if the pen works well and lever filler functions to fill the pen. The seller knew enough to talk about the bladder

It concerns me a bit that the section is out with a seller who knows not much about pens.

Is it Really Loose? Barrel crack?

MOST sellers who don't replace the sac themselves usually don't take one apart like that.

Check the barrel end close when you get that especially good deal home.

It never ceases to amaze me how many sellers "don't know anything about pens", yet know exactly what sort of photos to take, and the same apparent knowledge of some details.

You are only asking because you know you have done very well.

Well...there is that :)

I knew enough to know that icicles are unusual - and that I was probably looking at one in the picture. But yeah - I'm a total newbie who has fallen head over heels for Esterbrooks and just had to say "LOOK WHAT I FOUND!" a little bit.

AND - thanks for the heads-up, Bruce! I'll check it over carefully for cracks that would have made the section too easy to get out. My fingers are crossed that it's in decent shape!

I know, I understand. I have done the same thing, and if I had scored that icicle, I would have done just the same. What you want to know is just how well you have done. Wait till you receive it and check it over, then let us know its condition. Just in case it does not come across, I am happy for you.

One thing I have been doing more and more is checking the seller's other listings. If they are selling one pen, and 20 old belt buckles, I'm inclined to believe they don't know much about pens. If the seller has two pages of pens, all with the claim of "not knowing anything", I suspect a bait being set. Then, you look closely at the photos several times to find out what they may not be saying.

A friend of mine wants to sell some pens she found in her mother's house and asked me to take a look at them. I haven't gotten around to it because I've been having camera issues, but I offered to take photos of the pens as well as doing research on them. So, if she says "I don't know much about pens" that would be true. But if she says "A friend of mine says X and Y" I want to be as accurate as I can be in the descriptions, having been on the buyer's side of things, when the seller doesn't know how to answer basic questions, such as "Are there any sort of markings or engravings?" or "Do you know what the nib width is?" Or "Could you provide better pictures of the nib and feed (um, that would be the pointy metal bit at the end and the black zipper-looking part underneath that...)?"

The pens of course are being sold as is but if I can say "This is a green Easterbrook SJ with a 2256 nib" or something like that, it helps her to get a decent price. As opposed to me getting an English-made 51 Vac a couple of years ago for the starting bid because the cap was wrong and so nobody else bid (good for me, not so good for the seller).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

The icicle arrived - and it is near immaculate! It is an SJ, which is what I wanted. At this time I don't have a way to give any better pictures than the ebay auction had at the beginning of the thread...but I am very very happy. There are a couple of light scratches near the end, but other than that it is pristine. This was a really good gamble!

And today I took another gamble and grabbed a dollar pen from the bay for $18. Fingers crossed on this one, too - I have really wanted a dollar pen for the collection...

These things really are addicting!

We could have told you, but would you have listened? :D

Again, Well Done.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
