How To Fit A Manga G Nib Into A Noodler's Ahab

Doing more random little tests. The tape overfeed seems to be necessary. When I try to use the pen without it, the ink tends to burp out on the page occasionally.

 

So far Diamine reigns supreme, and Noodler's is working well. I only tried the one J. Herbin, and that was awful. I've yet to try dip inks, but will get to it. And I'll eventually do some scans of the inks I try with the pen.

 

On day four of very frequent use, the very tip of the nib is starting to get a bit worn. The ink flows down the tines just fine, and I can see it resting at the tip, but it's a giving me some hard-starting just in the last couple hours. There is some very slight corrosion on the underside and the outer edges of the nib, but not on the tines yet. Yay!

Did I under stand you correctly that you not only restored the fins, but deepened the trough too?

Hilariously enough, my Ackerman pump pen did show up (well, sort of, it was the incorrect agreed-upon replacement) today. I gave it a swift test, and I have to say that my Noodler's mod seems to work better, and definitely holds more ink.

I don't have the Rouge Hematite, but I do have Stormy Grey. It does seem a bit more viscous than the normal colors.

First off, this is an ingenious hack and I'm incredibly happy I stumbled across this thread! Maybe now I can stop drooling over the Desiderata pens....

 

If only I owned a Dremel, I'd be a happy human, though I'd have a hard time choosing between this mod and the Ease My Flex mod... Okay, I'd need a second Ahab so I could do both. (And a third Ahab, to have a control sample.... )

 

Also, maybe I'm just big on flex porn, but I would seriously pay money to see Black Swan in Australian Roses through this modification. If you have photos of the same (or Stormy Grey!), please, oh pretty please, share with the class!

Desiderata pens are gorgeous! I love wooden writing instruments.. Well-made ones, that is. (I had a cheapie "rose wood" fountain pen that fell apart soon after I got it. But for $2, I wasn't expecting much. Oh, eBay...) Despite the fact that I love my Noodler's hack, and don't really need a Desiderata, I still drool over them. Hmm.. I say I don't need one, but maybe someday.. Oh, the inner struggle!

 

And I'm glad you enjoy the hack! Noodler's pens are kind of addictive, if I do say so myself. I have four Ahabs, a Nib Creaper, Acrylic Konrad, and now an Acrylic Neponset.. and plans for more! It's nice to be able to tinker with the Ahabs, now that their parts are easily replaceable.

 

And there will definitely be scans/photos of the inks I've tried. I currently have Black Swan in Australian Roses inked up, and some Stormy Grey is going to be next! No payment needed, lol.

They're definitely lovely to look at, and I have my eye on a ten-pack of these! I can't wait to try them out and compare them to the chrome-plated nibs!

While I love to hear about drool, there's an option now available for preorder that won't set you back an arm and a leg. Check out the Daedalus line. Also, the Instagram page (on the "media" page of the website) has some fun pics with BSinAR I took with a Titanium coated Zebra g.

I am familiar with titanium nitride coatings from machine tools, and it really makes a big difference on wear, It should help for corrosion too. Titanium nitride is not to be confused with the metal titanium.

Titanium nitride coating is only a few microns thick, but almost as hard as diamond.

 

This is a great application for this treatment, HCS steel, with a protective coating.

Cant wait!

 

A quick note on titanium as a material for nibs.

It is not that titanium can't be used for nibs, the problem is the market is to small to recover the cost of developing a suitable titanium alloy and accompanying manufacturing technology.

If people used fountain pens like smart phones, we would have titanium nibs.

I have a pack of Titanium-coated G's on order, as well, to use in my Desiderata Sleek (which I just picked up but haven't had a chance to try out yet). The first thing I'm going to do is experiment with one regular G nib on one end, and another on the other end that I've dipped in "Everbrite ProtectaClear"--some stuff I got to seal jewelry. For all I know, it may have rendered the nib unusable; but I"m hoping it'll make the regular nibs last a little longer. I guess I'll find out!

Those are juicy lines indeed! WOW! It looks like the feeds in your pens are better able to keep up with making such fat lines, than the Noodler's feed is. The widest line I've been able to get with this hack is about 3.5mm. After that, railroading is pretty much the only outcome.

 

I am definitely considering a Cherry & Koa Mercury. It's just too damn beautiful.

Alright, some more inky test photos. J. Herbin Bouquet d'Antan was a complete failure. All those streaks are from droplets that just ran right out while trying to write. I smeared them out so they wouldn't bleed through the paper. Blergh!

 

 

Then I tried Diamine Peach Haze, which worked as well as the Salamander. Peach Haze also has some lovely sheen in wetter areas--they pool out to gold edges.

They do have Titanium nibs! They're hard to come by, but I know the BulkFiller came with that as an option when it was first released.

Thank you very much! So far, my use of the TiN coated nib is very, very positive. No noticeable change in performance and it's been…16 days in a filled pen? I'm impressed.

ALMOST as hard as diamond! Cherry/Koa is pretty strong. These take a while to make, so…

Good Gods! Those photos are just incredible. Well done, madam! And here I didn't think I *liked* peach-colored inks.... sigh. This website, man. It never talks you out of wanting things, only ever in. I swear I'm going to need a second job just to support my pen habits....

 

TeaHive, I have a question. I know that to make a dry ink "wetter", a little detergent can be used. Is it possible to use something to "dry" the Bouquet d'Antan?

I have no idea about how to make an ink drier.. Maybe let the bottle sit out for a couple days to evaporate a bit? Or mix it with J. Herbin Stormy Grey. My new solution with a trouble ink is to mix in some Stormy Grey, lol.
