A Big Red From Our Own Thomas Bickham

I have for long admired and wanted the vintage Parker Big Red. There was something about the pen's aesthetic that kept dragging to gawk at it whenever it was listed by restorers. But I always hesitated taking the plunge.

Some months back, I kind of made a compromise with my wallet and went for a pristine Red Jr. with a semi flexible nib from David of Baton Rouge ( this ol'house on eBay).

Normally I always match the pen color with my favourite ink and given the deep orange I would have chosen Diamines Ancient Copper or better still ordered Noodler's Apache Sunset. But then I don't use red hues very often. In this case I was so smitten with the Red Jr that I wanted to use it more frequently. Hence I inked it up with my fave, Bilberry and loved the softness of the nib, so much so that I began looking for the Big Red more actively.

Naturally with Thomas Bickham listing the Big Red consistently almost every week, he was my "go to" gawking site for many weeks. I even dared to bid once or twice.

Today morning in a sleepy haze I just went for it! And got it! I am glad to get it from Thomas as he has given me most of my vintage pens and I know him to double check on the pen before he sends it (no affiliations yadda yadda .......)

I think I might post a short review once I get the pen. I know the great pen has been reviewed very often, but just thought my recent experience may just add to it.

What say?

Nice pens! I think it's "Bickham," by the way.

The Jade version is one of my grail pens, more for its history in fountainpendom than it's aesthetic.

They are a milestone in the history of fountain pens.

Lovely Big Red you've got there!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
