Pilot Falcon With Mottishaw Custom Nib

CraigR

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about ordering a Pilot Falcon resin with a customized nib from John Mottishaw (nibs.com). The nib I am considering would be a cursive italic grind with additonal flex added.

Does anyone have experience with this pen and nib combination? Or thoughts/suggestions on the matter?

I have bought custom nibbed pens (Pelikan M805) from Mottishaw in the past and have been well pleased.

Thanks

Craig,

Even thought the nib and pen was not for me, the pen and the way it was tuned, was perfect and it performed just as it was supposed to.

I am going to buy another Pilot, so it wasn't the brand, it was the size and nib.

Sorry to hijack, but I got my Falcon ground by Mike Masuyama from a SM to an SF but the nib came back with zero tipping, very stiff and scratchy. Can anything be done to salvage it? It was an expensive pen and it's basically unusable now.

My advice is to first of all contact Mike, let him know about the problem and give him the opportunity to correct it or offer alternative solutions.

Thanks. I contacted him. I'm sure I'm screwed since I tried to smooth the nib out some (thinking I wouldn't be able to send it back).

I like italics.

I like flex.

Not sure I would like both at the same time.

Curious to know why or how that works for people.

Mike asked me to send the pen to him. He was awesome! I love being part of this pen community! :)

Though I'm not sure how practical a Soft italic nib would be unless you just like them soft for the extra cushion feel maybe sure it can be good I do have some experience with Pilot's soft nib through my custom heritage 91 soft medium its a good nib for everyday writing with some occational flare for your first letter when writing

Craig, if you do have a Falcon nib ground to CI, please let us know how you like it. And show us a writing sample, of course. Please?

I sure will. It will not be until February, however, as I will need to sell a pen or two to fund the new one. Such is the life of a fountain pen collector on a tight budget.

I'd love to see a writing sample as well, there's not many Falcons ground to CI out there.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
