Rusewe Piston Filler

Write Again

Recommended Posts

I was going through a bunch of my pens today and found an all black pen, hadn't remember seeing it before so I pulled it out and took a better look at it. It is a black piston filler with RUSEWE stamped on the cap. Also, "Rieder Volksfest 1944" was stamped on the other side of the cap. I tried googling the pen, but didn't get anything.

Any insight on this pen or Rusewe would be great!

Big Chance the writing on that cap is an advertisement.

What does the nib say?

Yeah, I figured the Volksfest stuff is advertising.

Nib looks like it was changed though, I don't have the pen in front of me right now but it says something like "14K MADE IN USA".

Like you say, it is either a European Frankenpen with a donor nib, or it might be a USA pen. Alas I am no specialist on vintage German/European/USA pens.

I would take more pics with details of the nib, the filling system etc and also pose the question in the USA forum.

It's unusual for a manufacturer to inscribe the name on the cap. Rusewe maybe the individual who once owned it.

They came as a boon, and a blessing to men,
The Pickwick, the Owl and the Waverley pen

I was able to find a couple other Rusewe pens with the name stamped in the cap, they are different colors and styles though.

Yours is a Frankie.

War pen; most War pens were made with out cap bands because metal was needed to make guns.

It is Austrian. Folksfest = Folks Party, like an Octoberfest...often done in every village. I'd say some one won it in a raffle in Austria near the pen company.

Some of the War CN/steel nibs were not very good...especially in the last full year of the War....sort of so so.

Mine I guess at middle '50's in the matching ball points are from @ that time...the common problems of a that era BP, and cork piston's sort of dated it then. By '55 the new good plastic gasket was in....being better than the '40's one.

Semi-flex 14 K Bock nib, #2...the nib is small but the Pen is a medium-small one like a Pelikan 140, so the nib is similar. It was a quite popular size, Kaweco, Osmia and Geha also made medium-small pens.

My cracked ice is a semi-flex 14 k Bock # 1 nib. It is a tiny pen.

Bo Bo, you pretty much answered every question I had about the pen. Now, was Rusewe a middle tier brand?

That cracked is color way is absolutely gorgeous though!

Thank you for the input and education!

I'd say second tier...the plastic is ok, but lacks that tad to be good.

I do not know how many pen companies were in Austria. I'm sure there were import fees for German, French, Italian or British ones; to protect home industries. It did survive the invasion of German pens after '38.

There were Americans, along with the Russians, Brits and I'd bet the French too, stationed in Vienna/Austria right after the war. ('The Third Man' movie.) Could be the pen was re-nibbed then as much as later. It don't strike me as a high quality nib....even as high as Wearever.

This is just a guess of mine....not a fact to back it up.

Though the '30-50's Wearever was the biggest pen producer on earth by lot. They also made solid second tier and third tier and lesser pens. So they could have made that nib too. They made pens for many tiny companies.

Your pen looks solidly made, as I said, the steel end of the war nibs were not as good as they could be. They worked...they had to in they were used by soldiers.

Could be someone wanted a golden colored nib rather than a silvery steel one...."Bling" time! B) Privates couldn't afford big time bling.

I was able to buy some cheap '50-60's German two color nibs that are third tier. Adequate, nothing more...some small flex or springy regular flex. As 'noobie' I was happy to find them.

Some nice poster pointed out Rusewe to me, so I was able to chase them on German Ebay.

I learned from many, many people, and am still learning. So return the favor gladly. I'd never ever heard of Bossert & Erhart until yesterday.

You learn something new everyday.

The pen seems like pretty decent quality, it's not like of the cheaper war time US pens you see around here. Surprisingly enough the cork is about 95% there still and softened up with a little soaking.

The section does have a decent size crack in it too, don't know if this was from the new nib being put in (whenever that was) or happened/before after. The clip has no gold plating left on it, but that's okay I was able to shine it up anyways.

After reading your post I jumped on the German eBay site and found 2 Rusewe pens up there right now, one is a maroon pen with a band cap, besides the cap it looks very similar to mine. It does have the oval Rusewe logo on the cap rather than standard font.

That's one of the best things about this hobby, learning something new all the time. Some people are like encyclopedias when it comes to FP history/repair/everything.

I'd love to get the pen all cleaned up and writing, but the section might be an issue. Either way, it's a unique piece that you don't see a whole of on this side of the lake.

I do have an advantage being on the other side of the Pond when it comes to getting German pens. Mostly I've been going to live auctions for my pens lately....2/3rds of the time.Last time I made out like a bandit, being the only one bidding.

I've also reached the point where I 'need' only two German pens (outside two grail pens)....could use some 5 US pens....but really am not going to get into US pens. I have too many pens as is....pushing 70 or is that 80..

Do make sure they take Paypal and ship world wide. Many Germans just use a bank card and not a credit card so are not in Paypal....

The Junior looks good, but is expensive.

The purple one has a Daur nib...a nail. It's expensive too.

Aha, I was thinking it was RuSeWe, much like KaWeCo.

Yes make sure PayPal is accepted first. I lost out on a good deal that way. Sometimes the seller will have their private PayPal account and cut you a break, but not always.

You can always ask nicely and mail the guy cash. Many are quite happy with that.

To save getting small change, get the change in stamps, to make up the odd amounts for future purchases.

I thought of that, but a registered letter was even more than the wire transfer. She's still holding it, I may do a money order after Xmas.

Sigh, highlighters...now. No fountain pens.....some ink.

At least the firm is still there.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
