Pen Pics Taken With The Iphone 6, Who Knew?!

So I sell pens here and there and have a mini lightbox that I use for the Pen Pics. I usually use a Canon Rebel DSLR for the pentography. But last week i forgot to put the memory card back in the camera after an upload and was too lazy to walk upstairs to fetch it, so instead I experimented with using the iPhone 6 instead. Holy cow the results were fantastic. What I was most impressed with was the macro abilities of the phone camera. I posted some example pics below to show you what I mean. The pics have not been edited or retouched in anyway.

Enjoy!

I'm still using a 4s, which has a camera not much inferior to the 6, and the quality is pretty stunning. But you must have decent conditions: those tiny sensors don't deal well with low light, and the flash is awful.

Absolutely agree, without the lightbox and lamps these pics would be no where near the quality. Nevertheless it's still pretty neat.

Stunning pics and nice pens. Parker 75 and Sheaffer Targas are among my favourite pens. I too use my i-Phone's 4S for pen pics and am also struck by its macro ability. Results are rather poor with landscapes though.

Amazing pics. I'd never have guessed they weren't from a DSLR. Good lighting a must to get that quality, as you noted.

This was taken with an iPhone 6- I shoot on a table next to a window that has a gauzy off-white shade over it...works out pretty nicely during daylight hours. My point and shoot Canon in macro mode doesn't produce photos any better than this, so until I get a DSLR the iPhone 6 will suffice.

Tiny sensors have nearly infinite depth of field, it is a mathematical function. You can add auxiliary lenses to your iPhone to gain selective focus but then you might as well be using a SLR.

My employer pays me to take pictures. I've got some great tools at my disposal. But your best camera is the one in your hands and you're doing nice work.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
