Omas Ogiva Vintage - Video Review

Barnaby Bumble

Recommended Posts

After having every technical problem known to man, I've finally gotten my first pen review video posted to YouTube. Views appreciated! Comments welcome! And there will be more reviews coming, so maybe you even want to subscribe?

I chose my Ogiva Vintage for the first review because there don't seem to be any video reviews of it out there, which is a shame, and because it's one of my favorite pens.

Great review. Can you do close ups of the pen? I think it would add another element to the video.

Your pen is beautiful. Omas does a beautiful job replicating the colors and style of the 30's/40's fountain pen.

Thanks, Crazyorange! Do you mean video close-ups? (There's a close-up still image at the end of the review.) I'll try to include some in the next one.

Video close-ups are a little hard to manage right now. My camera won't record directly to a computer, which means I can't see what's in focus as I'm recording. I set focus before I start and then try to stay within that depth of field.

After recording this review something like 8 times over the course of 2.5 days, only to discover afterwards that the video dropped half way in, or the audio dropped after 2 minutes, or everything recorded but YouTube converted it to some extremely low resolution on upload, I was happy just to have a complete, hi-def review posted. :)

I'll see about shooting some "B roll" close-ups for the next one.

Thanks for watching!

You have my sympathy. I started doing videos for my practice......and it's frustrating.....not as easy as it looks. Practice makes perfect;)

Yeah...I was thinking close ups at the beginning. Keep posting....I signed up to get your YouTube videos. Looking forward to different people reviewing pens.

Wow. Thanks a lot, man. Really. I hope what I post is worth it.

Add close-ups. Got it.

Yeah, I had all kinds of fits with my equipment. Turned out my microphone interface hated the USB board in my computer. Had to switch to a different one. Debugging my own equipment is one thing, but my real favorite part of the process is uploading a high-def video to YouTube, finding that their processor converted it to 360p, and then having to guess why.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
