A Few Bespoke "woodies"

It's been a while since I posted so thought I would share my most recent with you.

This first one is loosely based on an earlier piston filler. The customer saw it and wanted one made slightly larger and as a cartridge converter. It is fitted with a #6 JoWo with a custom grind by "oxonian".

This one is some beautifully grained Bethlehem Olive Wood. I would have liked a longer piece so that I coulld match the grain, but I could only get 5" lengths. The customer wanted the sharp angles and Ebonite inserts and section.

With this one (again Irish Bog Oak) the customer even supplied a drawing of his rough requirements! Im not used to working from drawings, but I quite like the transition from threads to barrel.

Pen received!

The monkeys are happy like... Monkeys.

And me too :-)

My only regret is that it does not have a #8 nib... What a pity that good IPG nibs are not produced in that size...

Thanks for the work, John!

I really like that second pen, how does the cap stay on the body? Is it those screw threads I can see? also would it be possible to do the grip in wood? What pen kits are you using? Where did you get them? I apologise for the barrage of questions but I like your pens very and am eager to get into pen making myself thanks

I have just got a lathe and I have always been fascinated by making pens. I am still very new to this.

Many thanks Luis, I'm happy that you are pleased with the pen, and thanks for posting it on your local forum.

I love that pen rest!!!

Nice! I like those IBO pens. Are the threads machined directly in the IBO?

The olive wood pen has an insert made from ebonite within the barrel that is threaded internally for the section and externally for the cap which has a full acrylic insert. It is possible to make a wooden front section, but not very practical as it would probably get stained with ink. there is an early post of mine of a Yew pen with a wooden section.

There are no kits used in making these pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
