Phased out, utterly gone. Cross has sold the last few in their annual online sale, I got 2 at great prices at that time (2011, I think)

Tried to get an extra nib later, and I think I got the last European nib sometime early 2012 through my B&M shop. He had to plead with them to look for one... Now I have all 4 sizes of the gold nibs with 3 pens.

I like mine. No experience with the steel nibs though, but were reportedly OK.

If you can get a good one, go for it, I would say.

Bear in mind though that some people can't get the hang of the clip (you have to squeeze the end for it to open up) and the cap does not seat tightly. It is friction fit and after a while the metal of the cap may become a bit loose...

Bought a Merlot with gold nib around 2007-2008. Love the pen. Nib is a medium, but the flow is such that the line it lays down is closer to a broad. but it is buttery smooth to write with.

So I now own 3, and they are among the last pens I would get rid of.

I've always wanted one. I think now, versus earlier in my Pen likings, I'd rather have a fine nib.

I've just never been willing to pay what they cost.

During their close outs I saw the Merlots and a couple of the lined shiny chrome ones go cheap but I'd have to

have the Selenium Blue myself.

Didn't Namiki make the nibs?

Correct, as for the gold nibs on the Merlot and the Palladium, these were made by Pilot/Namiki.

The other pens had steel nibs, and afaik these were American made.

Cross has looked at Japan again this year with the Peerless. These have reportedly Sailor nibs

Using mine today for the first time after having bought it in 2007. Mine is a Broad with deep purple section, gold nib.

Probably the best modern nib I have used and the only modern designed pen I can think of, bad mistake in stopping manufacture.

I have the gold shimmer verve with the steel nib. It's a wonderful writer. Smooth and resonsive nib.

Dont see many come up for sale on EBAY. I guess people who have them dont want to let go of them because theya are so nice.

I wish Cross would bring that inlaid nib back in a more classic design. The Carene and Legacy are working for Waterman and Sheaffer.

LOL :)

I just checked EBAY, and there are a few Verve fountain pens for sale now. Some very expensive but some decently priced too. The previous time I checked couldn't find any, so anyone looking to get one, might want to check it out now.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
