Worst Buying Experience Ever...

Worst buying experience in almost 15 years of fountain pen collecting - from Pensinasia Marketing and its owner, G.h. Tay (Pensinasia).
For years, I've been drooling over his photos and I finally got it together to buy my dream pen from him. I paid a substantial deposit, and arranged to make the final payment, which I did, on Sunday. I must have sold off something like six pens. After all of that, he turns around and cancels the purchase because he was "not eligible for seller protection" from Paypal. After sitting on my money for a month. The real reason? He probably figured he could sell it for more money. I've bought and sold expensive pens from and to many people around the world. Always based on trust. It's that kind of hobby.

The man did not even bother to inquire, even ask for references, try and find a solution. Just took the nearest exit. Bummer.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. It's even worse since you sold off so many pens in order to buy a single pen and then it does not happen- apparently because of a very flimsy excuse.

A week ago I sent him an email mentioning that I am interested in a particular pen shown on the Pensinasia website. Have not heard back since then.

I can understand someone not wanting to ship to a country (or shipping method, non-trackable shipping isn't covered, or to unverified paypal accounts) that doesn't give them seller protection... but at least he could have refunded your money at the time of canceling the purchase. OR at the very least mentioned the stipulations to where and who he would ship to.

He should have noticed that he wouldn't be eligible for seller protection at the time you made the deposit if it was done thru paypal.

So no communication at all? Just a notice that he was canceling for that reason?

I've been communicating with him for years.

He had no problem with the shipping. My accounts are verified.

Yes, he should have noticed at the time of the deposit.

So, no communication until he cancelled. Yes, he refunded.

But his reasons are suspect.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
