Mb149B/bb Or Edison 1.5Mm Italic ?

I would enjoy feedback from users of the MB149 in B or BB as well as from those who use an Edison 1.5mm italic.

I write long letters to my children, now in college, on good cotton paper. They love these letters and save every one. :) The heavier paper doesn't take ink as readily, so I usually turn to my Visconti Opera Master Demo using a bold nib ... still I want more ink put down and more character width.

I am having trouble finding a pre-loved MB149 with B or BB. It would go very well with my MB149 M.

I noticed that Brian Grey offers a JoWo #6 in 1.5mm; this would thread right into my Taccia Momenta. And $25 v. $400 is worth consideration.

My questions:

I love my MB149 nib. The architecture of the tipping is wonderful, and the writing experience is well-known to those who own them. I'm not sure a JoWo would be anywhere close to the experience of the 149's nib on paper. I have a JoWo #6 in bold and love it, but it just doesn't have the gravity of the 149.

I would like to hear others' experience in (a) finding a 149B/BB and (B) using Edison's 1.5 mm italic.

Thanks in advance!

Finding a used 149 with a B is hard and a BB much harder unless they are fairly new. Since they did not mark the nibs you sometimes have to gamble on pictures or pay a bit more from a reputable source. I think the cost of a nib exchange is $300 for a used pen outside the exchange period. You could do that with you existing 149 or buy a cheapie and send it in for service. Maybe find a pen with a broken piston, send it in for service, ask for the old nib back and sell that here for $100 or so. Maybe around $350 net with a guaranteed BB nib. If you just want B, watch the classifieds here for a bit.

I have a bb 149 and to write in any one of those notebooks is a feat in itself. BB is too big

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the responses.

I hadn't thought of buying a damaged 149 and sending it in, etc. Good idea.

And yes, I trust Brian with JoWo. I visited his site yesterday. I just like 149's ... :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
