Noodler's 54Th Ink Suddenly Smells Moldy?

I'm quite familiar with how Noodler's inks smell normally - chemically, sharp, like disinfectant.

I crack open my bottle (1/3 full) after giving it a vigorous shake and get hit in the nose with a moldy, vegetal smell! I don't think this is normal. In fact, This is the second bottle of 54th to start smelling funky on me after going through 1/2 a bottle. What's the deal?

For reference, I have been using Noodler's black for a long time now - almost 3 full bottles. Never has it started smelling moldy like this. I would like to believe I practice good pen hygiene: I thoroughly flush pens with goulet pen flush when changing inks, occasionally cycle water through until it runs clear, etc.

Any idea why this is happening? And is there some kind of warranty for this kind of problem?

I would post this question to the Inky Thoughts section of the forum and see if Nathan gives a response. How old is the bottle? I have 30 year old ink with no issues, not Noodler's of course.

Hello xwingrox,

This is something more in line with "Inky Thoughts," but.....

Yes, I would contact Mr. Tardiff here at FPN: Eternally Noodling, https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/user/648-eternally-noodling/

OR,

contact his distributor, Luxury Brands: http://luxurybrandsusa.com/

Best regards,

Chris

I contacted him and posted in the inks thoughts section.

The bottle is only ~8 months old. I try hard not to contaminate my inks.

I've already ordered another new bottle so I can see if this happens again...

I think you just contact the distributor here: http://noodlersink.com/ .

I don't really care to speculate why it's happening because I don't assume you could have prevented it, anyway. But if you want to try something different, fill your pens from a sample vial of it that you refill as needed. If you use a clean syringe to transfer the ink, or if you can pour it (need steady hands!), you can limit the exposure to contamination.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.

OK, great. Good luck and let us know what Nathan Tardif's response is when you get it.

Nathan? Forget it! He never replies. At least to me and a lot of others.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
