Why can I not do pictures? It's a telescoping fountain pen? Gold none magnetic? 2'' to 5'' only know where it was found. Don't know anything else about it. The tip says Elmwood pen co 4

Looks to be a portable dip pen probably from the late 1800's.

You might want to check early/old trade journals such as "American Stationers" in Google books.

Also, there are collector books on early writing instruments, including dip and retractable.

Elmwood is not familiar to me, (non-expert), but perhaps US based, not European. There is an Elmwood New Jersey, US, but that may not be your retractable pens origin.

Mabie Todd & Co. NY, and F & S Mordan London are two well known early pen companies.

Some websites devote space to study of older writing instruments.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
