New To Fountain Pen, Which One Should I Pick?

Hello all,

I just got myself into fountain pen. After seeing so many nice pens here, I think I am ready to get my first Pelikan.

At the moment, I am picking between Pelikan M400 (Green stripe/Balck) and Pelikan M101N Brown Tortoise.

The website I found, they are selling M400 around $210USD, M101N $360USD. I checked on ebay, most of the M101N is selling around 600USD.

Is M101N a bargain at this price? Could anything go wrong?

Cheers,

icu29

Go for the one that you personally find more appealing. Pelikan M400 is a great pen.
For the Pelikan M101N, others would be able to tell you better, but it would be a good idea to contact the seller/website and verify that the pen is in working condition.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

They are both new, in mint condition.

That's a very good price for both of them. I'd tell you to pick the one that appeals to you more, but the M101N will be tough to find at that price new again (even used that's not a price that shows up frequently). M400 is much more common and would be easier to add later. But you have to like the styling of the M101N.

If it were me, I'd choose the M101N.

I agree with risingsun. You have to go with the one that you find appealing. Both pens are roughly the same size. The M400 post a little bit better if that is important to you. The nibs are very comparable as is ink capacity. The bottom line comes down to styling and personal preference though it will be much easier to pick up an M400 later than one of these limited edition M101N's. You can find the M101N reviewed here if it helps you with your decision.

You should probably make your choice soon. That M101N is on my lust list and at that price I would scoop it up. In fact, why don't you send me a pm with a link to the offering so I can 'check it out for you'.

Hi DrCodfish,

It's on www.taobao.com. I am not sure if you have heard of it, it's an online shopping website in China, which is equivalent to Ebay.

Here is the links , it's in Chinese btw.

Be really careful of Dealers in or geographically close to China. A lot of nice lookin fakes coming out of there. I only buy from the US, Some European countries, and only one reliable dealer out of Japan. Buying out of Asia is tricky because of all the Knock offs coming out of China.

Following up on my original post.

Just came back from China, I thought I should post up the photos here. I paid about $350USD for it :D

Everything looks decent to me, I think it is genuine.

101N....is a very beautiful pen.

Nib is as good as a M400, I would think.

Now all you need is a couple of '50-65 nibs for the better nib....in I like the older nibs that are more stubbish and have a bit or a tad of flex.

I have all three M101Ns and I find the nibs to be somewhere between the modern M400 and the early M400, not quite to the 50-65 standard, but pretty good.

Beautiful pen and scrumptious photos! I personally prefer the M101N's nib to the standard m400 nib they make now.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
