Hi, My Name Is Morwen And I Am An Ink Hoarder :)

Morwen

Recommended Posts

It started in the usual way... I got one bottle of ink, Aurora black, to use with my parker jotter, because I did not like the quink cartriges. Then I started browsing the internet. Discovered Diamine... come on, a bottle of Oxblood will not hurt. Then I discovered Noodlers. Bought 10 bottles while on a trip to the US to save on shipping. Private reserve... Then discovered Iroshizuku... And Sailor. And Akkerman. J herbin... you get the picture.

It is not economical for me to buy samples, so I often buy the full bottle directly, thinking that if I do not like it, can can use it in a mix or give it away. I have bought inks just for the pretty bottle, thinking I'll use up the ink and have the pretty bottle for the mixes. BUT...

I realized with horror, that I do not want to use up ANY of my inks! Not unless I have a second bottle. Not even the ones I do not particularly like! And while it would make sense to order spares of the favourite colours, the ones that are just OK will just stay there, because I have to have them all. I will not have a pretty Akkerman or Iro or Kingdom Note bottle for mixes any time soon because I do not want no NOT have this ink any more... When did this happen? I imagine myself hugging my ink drawer and drooling and saying "My Preciousssss"!

And the funny thing is, I am not sure I want this to change :):).

Anyone else suffering the same "mental disorder"?

Yup, sick, sick, sick!!! Best to join IA - Inkalcoholis Anonymous. A lot of members here. The sure cure is step 12 where you are forced to buy seven bottles of pink ink in the liter size.

Welcome to FPN! :D

I think your situation describes all of ours! I got my first Iroshizuku colours because of the bottle. If the colour wasn't to my taste, then I'd just use the ink bottle later. Well the ink I bought was kon-peki, which is one of my favourite inks now... About 45 ink bottles later, here I am! :yikes:

Um ... YES. Man, I totally feel you on this. :) This past month I ended up selling samples of some inks, and it was such a painful experience to let go of some of them. I mean, I hate brown inks, so it should not have been hard to let go of the Kingdom Note Mandarin Duck, but it still really was. Arg.

I do find that it is temporary though. The pain lasts a while, but then eventually I don't miss the ink I never used anyway.

As for the other problem, of not wanting to use inks unless i have a back up, I solve this problem by buying TONS of back ups! Any time I really really like an ink, I get at least one extra bottle, and sometimes as many as 9. <blush> Seriously, my back up ink cabinet is almost as large as my general ink storage!

Welcome to FPN, fellow nutbar! :)

Muahahaha...it always starts with black and blue, it seems...my downward spiral began with J. Herbin Perle Noire and transferred to Diamine Twilight before I was lost to the technicolor world of rainbow inks...

Though I haven't had issues with using whichever bottle I have on hand. My reasoning is that, once I open them, might as well use them before it evaporates. (Not that they have a high chance of that, being kept in boxes and windowless shelves...but paranoia knows no logic.)

So do it! Use the inks! They look prettier on paper than in bottles, honest!

That would depend on the bottle :). Have you seen 20 Iro bottles in a row? Or 7 edelsteins together? :). I might have to, though. The way it's going in a few years instead of hugging the ink drawer, I'll be pulling a Scrouge McDuck, and diving in a vault of ink bottles :).

So far I have only bought backups for the inks that fall in the "Absolute and total perfection" category - Noodlers XFeather and Noodler's Black, the perfect blacks, MB Irish green that is the perfect green, Iro Asa-gao which is so far the perfect blue, Levenger True Teal which is the perfect teal. Having over 80 bottles of ink (excluding the backups), it would be a bit too much even for me to get backups of everything :). I am thinking lately to maybe solve the problem by keeping a small sample, say 5 ml of every ink I decide to use up (or give away) and not re-buy. This way it will take less space, I can have the bottle and technically I will still "have" in in enough quantity to test later if my taste for it has changed. Not sure if it will work, but I will try. I am using my Take-sumi heavily for note taking, as I have discovered that it is the least favourite of my blacks, so not necessary to use in something I want to keep for many years after, yet a good enough ink to carry around and risk using all kinds of paper. It is wonderful, wonderful ink, but I like black to be as black as a black hole, and take sumi is a bit lighter. I think I might actually get to the bottom of the bottle...

that's what I'm trying to do now too. I keep 10 mL in two vials - one for using, one for mixing - and then give the rest away or sell them in sample vials. It's helped clear out my ink considerably, and I'm going to try and make time to do that more and more in the coming week. I seriously need to let go of all the ink I'm not using! I am just saying, I sympathize with how hard that can be. :)

I sympathize very much! I find a great deal of satisfaction at just looking at the things I have. "Lookie there, I have that gorgeous Sailor blue. I will use it... someday." Certainly have not used it yet, and would be more inclined to use it if I had a backup, but some of these aren't cheap!

But I, too, feel no need for this to change. I will use things verrrrrry sparingly and they will last forever and I will be happy. The end! :)

Morwen, thanks for making me feel (relatively) normal today. I only have 53 bottles. :)

I'm recovering... in the last two years, I gave away more ink than I bought.

Amber -

And when I see your collection I wish I hadn't tossed all of my empty bottles, especially the Parkers with the plastic ink well that they made a few years back.

I admit, I love the bottles almost as much as the ink.

Y'all make me feel so much better about having six bottles of PE Turmaline stashed. I have a spare PE Garnet but all the others are singletons.

Nothing wrong with that.

Ink is only loaned to us; we either get it on paper or give to another more needy of ink, like me :D

This only means you have to join us :). But - I have never bought more that 1 bottle of ink of a colour at once. I have 3 bottles of XFeather but I got each of these separately...

I'll be honest here I hate ink hoarders especially people who buy the entire's shop stock of 1 ink making people wait months just to get a swig of that stuff only to miss it again because it was hoardly bought :(

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
