Spark Notebook @ Kickstarter

So I know Kate Matsudaira from startup/tech events and last week I saw this that she posted on her facebook feed about the Spark Notebook: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/475206776/spark-notebook-a-place-for-your-life-plans-and-gre

I specifically asked her about the paper and fountain pens, and she said that "that was being taken in consideration", and now on their FAQ they have this:

The paper is cougar paper (http://www.domtar.com/en/paper-products/cougar.asp) which is environmentally friendly.
It is smooth text white and here are the tech specs for the fountain pen fans:
70#, 104 GSM, 95 Opacity

I am not very smart, so, is this paper any good? Anyone has any info on it? I am backing the notebook (because you always back stuff that friends post, no matter if you use or not, right?) but knowing a little about the paper would help.

Thanks!

PS: I am not sure if I can post the Kickstarter link here, if not, please let me know and will remove.

I've posted several Kickstarter links since joining FPN and they haven't taken away my membership card or secret decoder ring (yet!), so I think you're safe. :) I typically post my KS alerts in the Market Watch forum. Thanx for the info!

Looks like you are 2 post's Short of the "Must Be This Tall To Ride This Ride" Regulation. 30 post and a couple of mos on the board allows you to use the Market watch section, IIRC. Moderators please correct any misinformation herein. Jim

I don't know this particular brand, but just because a paper is a name brand and relatively heavy doesn't mean it's FP friendly.

Generally Domtar is an excellent brand but as per these comments nothing is assumed. Paper needs to be tested to determine FP compatibility.

Generally speaking, 70# offset (aka 'text') paper is not bad with fountain pens, but it is very absorbent. I use 70# offset for 11x17 planning sheets. I rarely have bleed/show through, and feathering is minimal (depending upon the ink).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
