I Love Beautiful Handwriting

Recommended Posts

I'm an artist and have always appreciated and envied beautiful penmanship. So, I'm picky about the way everything works, from the actual pen to the paper. But, that's just a personal thing, so I'm not going to be judgmental about other people's penmanship. My interest is in finding pens and paper that help me achieve my own standards and interests. And, I'm interested in cost versus value. I have two Lamys and a Pilot Metropolitan so I'm probably on the low end when it comes to fountain pens. Still, I'm very into how a pen works and what I need to do myself to make them work. In other words, I'm not a collector. I've done a lot of searches for information on fountain pens and this group keeps coming up. I've read lots of great information and I have some questions as well as some thoughts so I wanted to join. Thanks!

Two words: Vintage Flex.

Easiest way to enjoy practicing your penmanship. Not always the cheapest though.........

Welcome! I've just started exploring the history of handwriting. I'm fascinated by how much variety there is: chancery, humanist, and all the other things I don't understand.

Welcome! As far as beautiful penmanship there are lots of threads in penmanship forum here devoted to that, both italic edged as well as flex based styles

Thanks everyone! I was trying to find information on fountain pens and this site kept coming up. I found lots of good information here and thought it looked like a great place to join. Now I can see I was right! As far as my own penmanship goes, I'm never satisfied. I've already posted some questions on pen nibs and now I'm going to be searching around for the people who are into different styles of writing based on nibs.

Develop good letter forms through practicing the correct forms and then, KEEP ON Practicing!

So, here's a sample of my handwriting. I need lots of practice, but this is the general idea. I used the Lamy Safari with an italic nib.

I think your handwriting looks very nice. Very small if those are 5 mm squares, but it looks neat. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
