World's Ugliest J

This was part of a group of Esties. Both jewels and the clip were perfect, as was the section, nib and j-bar. I do not know what happened to the body to remove the color but assume it was possible solvent. The barrel does not feel weak or brittle.

If anyone has an uglier functional J I'd love to see it!

That's too bad about the discoloration. I don't have any green Esties that are as nice looking (all mine are the paler green). But, no, can't say I have anything that remotely comes close in the "ugly J" contest.

Is it just surface abrasion or is the color actually bleached out?

Hmmm. Could that be a rare prototype of a new color variation they were experimenting with? "Acid-wash Green", I think it was called .....

It may be a rare 1980's acid washed Estie! Thanks hobiwan!.

The color is gone in those spots, as if bleached. I have harvested the bottom jewel and the top one is soon to go.

The previous owner must have used X ink in it! Esterbrook was ahead of its time. Acid-washed - who woulda thunkit. Kaweco's stone-washed finish must be an homage.

I was going to say that is like my green one! Then I saw the discoloration. To bad. Now if you can find a green body to replace the discolored one...

That just looks strange.

The dark green stripe at the end of the barrel is particularly interesting.

I have worse, but I am not showing them. They are toasted by heat gun incompetence, mine.

Aww, c'mon - let's see 'em, pajaro. You know what they say: if you can't be a good example, then serve as a horrible warning.

I've always loved the look of those green Esties. I've yet to try one, though. Is the texture only visual?

Hey Steve! I'm hijacking my own thread. Have you thought about the Estie-loaner-program? There is a pinned thread at the top of this forum giving you all the details. You'll have a nice grouping of pens and nibs to use. Its a heck of a deal, but sadly I was talked into buying one before I'd heard of the program. Be warned though. Bruce has said that Esties are like chips, can't stop at just one.

Now if I can just figure out where they keep these at WalMart.

Hmm. . . that sounds about right. That you're barging in looking for trouble, that is. I bought a TWSBI within a week of using Amber's wonderful pen. Just what are you trying to cause me? Poverty? Figures. I know of the program and I have been avoiding the topic like the plague. I do allow myself lusty peeks at wonderful Esterbrooks, though. I am growing quite fond of the green.

P.S. I may have seen them in the manager's office, but this was in Yankee territory. I asked about the pen and tried to explain that a gentleman in Texas liked vintage pens and inks. As soon as I told him that we were on the hunt for some thistle and your name was "Pau. . .," the door was quickly slammed in my face. I think the internal memos are really starting to circulate. Please be careful, for I fear you will need a bigger group of children to distract the employees while you cause mayhem.

I passed up the faded Esterbrook at the flea market--so no picture. They can lose a lot of their color. Does a barrel bulged at the lever ring count as an ugly J? (I do have one of those.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
