Getting the bug to buy a new piece and In the past I bought Namiki and Pilot on eBay which wasn't an issue of fakes but I'm looking at two very different FP on eBay and with Mont Blanc being so popular to fake not sure if legit.

First one is an over the top choice

2nd is if I come to my senses and decide I don't want to spend as much

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

I can't speak to the first pen (other than Jeez...is there enough gold on that thing?) but the second pen looks authentic as there's a piston knob and the 146 (and variants) are piston fillers. If it was me and I were jumping into the MB world, I'd start with a regular used 146 or 149 to see if I liked them before moving up the price chain; this way, your downside is limited if you decide that MB is not for you...

HTH!

The 146 is closer to market price and would be more desirable to me.

Are you going to use or collect? If you want a patron of the art MB wait for a used one and pay more like $1200 or so for the same model. The price of most drop a lot when used.

I know the gold isn't for everyone which is why i can't turn away from it! The past year I've been buying and reselling Maki e pens which I still love but this time around I want something more over the top. I'm ok with Mont Blanc as my first FP was a 149 which is still regret selling but I needed to fund new buys.

You want over the top, take a look at the ST Dupont 5th Ave. If you want to know more about it, PM me.

For more gold, I recommend the Peter the Great (Green) or Catherine the Great (red) MB pens. They are lots of flash without being too far over the top.

Well, you could look at the MB Moon Pearl - you get the exclusivity of an MB Limited Edition pen that has inlaid MOP (raden)...kind of a mix between MB and maki-e.

1st listing looks interesting. :D

2nd listing looks like the real deal but hard to tell without the "touch and feel and write" test. Seller has 100% rating.

Thanks for the help. I've been on and off all day and changed my mind again. I've looked at this one about half a dozen times today.

Thoughts?

That's a great looking pen, but for that price you could get the full silver version of that pen with the mother of pearl star which is far more attractive to me.

The alexander the great is a good price imo. I have never seen one sell in the 1200 range- used or not-- i may have missed a sell down the line but im pretty good at checking prices on that pen.

The upcoming Bonhams auction in SF has one used with an estimate range from $1200 to $1800. I think used with no box or papers it would be feasible to be around my estimate. I am not saying it would be easy to find as this pen is not one of the patrons I see selling a lot.

I think the BIN price is good for a new pen with all the documents.

I haven't seen. Full silver one like what your referring to. Would you have any links to one?

Here is a picture. You can have the diamond clip changed out for a plain one if it is not your taste.

It is the Montblanc Solitaire Silver Barley collection. Here is a link to the collection at Fountain Pen Hospital (no affiliation)

During the "secret sale" in March the went for 50% of retail, so $930. That would be a good price point.

I happen to have a very interesting couple of pieces for sale at great prices, including the Peter the Great mentioned above!

Peter the Great, mint with all boxes and papers:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181590063079?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Francois I, mint with only the wooden box:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181587777980?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

I have a few more of the Patron of Arts on their way to my shop in NYC. I have the Octavian and the Prince Regent, both mint with all boxes and papers.

I have been an independent seller on ebay for a couple of years now and have grown to LOVE the POA collection. They are STUNNING to look at; pictures honestly do not do them justice. Let me know if interested or bid directly through eBay. I live about 15 minutes from an MB boutique and have all my items checked for authenticity before I list, so these are 100% real. Thanks!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
