Mixing Powdered Ink Without Turning Green Or Blue Or...

Recommended Posts

If you are lucky enough to get a packet - or, as they are called in the land down under, a sachet - of Blackstone or Susemai powdered ink, the following instructions seem to work best for converting the powder into some 30ml of really great ink.

Clean and allow to dry completely a container that will hold at least 30ml of boiled, filtered water. Allow the water to cool slightly, and pour it into your container. Make sure the container is one that is watertight and that is approved for storing liquids.

The sachet comes as a foil packet with two sections separated by a zip-lock seal. Be careful, as some of the zip-locks can open partially or completely during shipping, allowing the powder to migrate from the main chamber into the outer chamber.

Tap the sachet so that the powder settles into the main chamber. Use a scissors to cut off a corner of the chamber above the zip-lock. If the outer chamber is clean, you can remove open the sachet completely, including the zip-lock.

Holding the sachet between your thumb and forefinger, squeeze it together, which will force the foil into a "V". Pour the powder all into your container that already has your boiled, filtered water in it. Tap the bottom of the sachet lightly to make sure you get all the powder out.

Put the cap on your container and shake vigorously until the powder and water are well mixed and there is no sediment remaining in the liquid. If the water is still warm, wait until it has cooled to room temperature, fill your pen with your new ink and start writing!

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

I sort of lost some powder... In a less than brilliant moment I chose a Diamine bottle and narrow neck and powder = inky chaos. Nice minion BTW!

I had success with a separate bottle for mixing. (I used a 150 ml Mason jar) In went the powder then amount of water for amount of ink I was mixing up, Stirred then shook. (room temp distilled water) But your mileage may vary. Then decanted into my storage bottles. (use latex or rubber gloves too)
:-)

Sinistral1's thoughts on warm/hot water are not bad however. I just tried something different.

I mixed mine with 24 ml water and thought it was 16%. Does that mean I've been using 19.2% in my pens? :yikes:

I think Sinistral's labeling may have been influenced by the Amber lack of concentration notation and hence confusion.

4/24 . . . couldn't be easier than that. I guess I failed Vossad's class on math. I did 24/30 (because you had said that was 13.3%) to get .8. .8x13.3 = roughly 16%. Talk about more complicated.

Okay... here is company that I have not tried, but I like looking at others being inky too. Keep in mind that this video is an AD and it is for an ink that is NOT fountain pen friendly.

The Susemai / Blackstone inks are safe for FPs and have been designed for fountain pens and have biocides to inhibit the growth of mold.

The 30ml per sachet is the highest recommended concentration. Most of us are incapable of following directions so we made it even stronger. The stronger it is, the more sheen you see, but also the more likely you are to have it be cloggy or fussy.

You can dilute it WAY down and still have great color and performance. See some of the reviews. Red Cashmere is Amazing at super low concentrations and it looks as pretty as MB Red Chalk.

The only thing to keep in mind, it is hard to take water back out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
