At the risk of overdoing my blue ink quota for the month, I hesitate to add this homage to the classic Waterman #52 BCHR... ;)

Okay, you caught me, I love Shocking Blue.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

How did you get sheen in a wash? Did you go over it with the pen after?

The quota for blue is unlimited.

I think the Shocking Blue is so insane that the sheen even shows up with a wash! It's that powerful!

Good to know that there will be no fines for overstepping the limitlessness of blue. ;)

Wow, that's some serious sheen. I'll have to get some! :D How does it compare to L. Elysium's brightness?

Gosh, don't know. Tell me more of this L. Elysium! My collection of blue-blacks is quite limited, since I have not tended to use it much. Now with a couple of blue-blacks that have more "punch," I'm adding it to my rotation.

I can say that Shocking Blue is dark, but vivid, and it is super saturated (obviously!), so dry time is long, and can smudge even after drying, depending on the paper. A little persnickety, but the sheen makes it worthwhile!

Liberty Elysium is not a blue black, it's a fairly bright blue. Have either of you used BSB?

Yes, indeed! A favorite! But is it possible that I have not done a sample swatch? How can that be?

Look for a dazzling display of BSB tonight!

OK, so I thought that SB was brighter. I guess that was just the wash tricking me. Liberty's Elysium is a Goulet exclusive and is the closest thing to BSB eye-searing I can think of.

Although Steve says that there's no limit to blue, I think this will put me over all acceptable bluity.

I've never seen BSB sheen before! Have seen it shade, though. Is it almost bulletproof even on vellum or a waxy paper? The thought had not occurred to me.

True! I hadn't seen sheen on regular paper, but on vellum, a great many inks show significant sheen. I haven't done a test of how well the ink stands up to water or alcohol, but I may give that a try. Stay tuned...

I just noticed that it is "wicked" intense. You're a New Englander already! Pretty good state outline too. I'm glad you included the snow clouds all over the state.

Really love the Thistle color.

Nothing like it

Wish a manufacturer would take up the challenge. Great name too

We probably need to get you to try some of the powdered inks. They are so much fun.

Results: BSB is fairly waterproof, depending on paper. It does best on regular Rhodia paper (80g), and worst on the light tracing paper (25 lb./40g).

Surprisingly, Thistle does very well! Like BSB, it is water resistant on some papers. Good to know!

Shocking Blue, as I had imagined, is a mess when it comes to water --and smudging with fingers. Unbelievable sheen and shading, but unstable!

Neat. I was expecting BSB to do worse on tracing paper. I guess that means it is able to soak in and bond to the fiber.

The rich, deeper tones of Liberty's Elysium. Very handsome ink. Thanks for letting me know about it!

That did not take you long to get some. It is fairly water resistant with minor color bleed. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
