Overlays, Combos, And The Seven Seas, From Newton Pens

A few months ago I was contacted to make a pen for a Hollywood movie director (no I can't mention his name) using two of his sterling rings in the design. They let me design the overlay but wanted the rings included in a pretty specific way. The rings were huge so that sort of dictated that the pen be huge as well. They also wanted to be sure the overlay was very thick and heavy. It certainly is. :)

Resting on an awesome gray platter I bought my wife for Christmas (don't tell her) at Riley Art Glass in Hot Springs. I took my art club kids there for a field trip to see them blow glass and make a large platter. Really amazing work.

Pen is made from a green and black marbled ebonite with a #8 18k Jowo nib, broad point.

Here is one of the rings, set with a couple dozen black diamonds.

The overlay was made by Andy Beliveau. He did an amazing job. I couldn't be happier.

A few months ago I was asked to make a modern pen pencil combo, and the only way I could figure out doing that was by finding a working combo. Once I found a combo that worked I had to find a material to match it. This thing was made somewhere between 1920 and 1940 (according to Richardspens.com), so finding a matching acrylic wasn't going to happen. What I decided to do was use the cap as a barrel band with black ebonite for the rest of it. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I love the depth of the material. You can really appreciate it looking at the ends.

Amazing pens (I have to get one of the combo FP/MP - the ideal EDC) Congratulations on three more masterpieces Shawn.

The combo is very interesting. What sort of fill system does it have? I have an old Arnold combo that is currently not working, but is a lever filler, and I think that most of the ones I've seen are also lever fillers on the pen end.

Awesome work Andy!

Shawn, one of the things I like about you is that you are willing to try things out, often with stunning results.

While the overlay is not my taste, it is certainly nice work.

And I like the combo. For a next one, you could think about using semi transparent acrylic, to create an ink-vieuw.

These are really gorgeous. But do you have silver coloured nibs? I think they would pop even more with a nib that matched. (Not the pen and pencil combo naturally, that looks perfect with silver on one end and gold on the other)

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

I do have polished steel nibs. Generally I prefer those over two tone. With the overlay pen, there aren't any monotone rhodium plated #8 nibs that I know of.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
