In Praise Of The Free Noodler's Eyedropper Pens

Is anyone else impressed by the free Noodler's pens you get in the 4.5oz bottles? I'm talking specifically about the Noodler's brand eyedropper pens, not the Preppies.

I ordered big ol' bottles of Dragon's Napalm, Borealis Black, and Nikita last month and each came with not one, but two of the eyedropper pens. Each ink came with one stiff nib and one flexible one. Sorry for the blurriness but this cellphone photo shows the difference (normal nib on left, flex on the right; note that the slit goes all the way up)

Here are two quick writing samples with each of the nibs:

These pens do feel cheaply made but are still better than I would expect from a free pen. The interior of the barrel is faceted in a really interesting way. Unfortunately, the general warning about eyedropper-filler pens does apply: low ink levels + hand heat = ink burp city. Still, I like 'em. I use them regularly (along with my Kaweco Sport) when TAing in the math help centre since they're cheap and sturdy enough.

Anyways! Been using these all weekend while working on a homework assignment (that I should really get back to...) and I've just had the best time of it :) Who else likes these pens? I could see them being super handy for testing out new inks! That big clear barrel is also perfect for pretty inks you just need to have in demonstrators.

I just received my free Noodlers eyedropper pen with my bottle of HOD and love it. Put some HOD in it and it writes great! Smooth, dark, wet and although it is supposed to be a fine, it is kinda between a fine and medium to me. I've heard about the warning but so far all seems to be well. I'd like to be able to use up most of the ink before refilling it. If I let it sit with nib up so that all the ink falls back into the barrel, them I'm guessing it will then be safe to open and refill with minimum risk of getting ink on my hards. All feedback appreciated. Yes, I'd love to know if other nibs are available for this pen and is it true that this is really a Platinum Preppy with a Noodlers logo on it?

I got mine with my 4.5-oz bottle of BSB, and that's what I put in it. Yes, it has the Noodler's logo on it, but other than that, it is identical to my other Preppy 0.3. Both are great little writers. I would have loved to have had some of these during my high-school and college days.

Some of my bottles come with the Platinum Preppy, and some come with the free pen illustrated in this thread. I'm not sure what the pattern is as to which ink gets which pen.

I haven't seen the stiff nibs, but I also haven't bought a big bottle in a while. Like the OP, I really enjoy the flex pen, and often keep it inked up. I think Mr. Tardif could sell this pen.

Have not seen these. The 4-1/2 oz Noodler's bottles I've gotten have had Preppies and Kuretake brush pens [with bottles of Kung Te Cheng] and [in the case of Dragon Catfish Pink] a Preppy highlighter.

I knew to expect the one but now I'm hoping to find another pen with my recent purchase of the 4.5 oz bottle of Noodler's Dragon's Napalm!

Does anyone know if this nib/feed are friction fit? I tried to remove mine earlier, but neither a gentle grip and pull, nor a twist (in case Nathan somehow upgraded to a removable nib unit) was able to remove the nib and feed from the section. I didn't want to damage the pen, so I stopped. 'Twould be nice to be able to remove it for easier cleaning.

Mine are the older ones. Both are friction fit. They don't come out as easily as his Konrad nibs, but they do come out. Do not twist. Just pull.

I'm finding the eyedropper very useful, since I also run a cheap waterbrush pen filled with dilute Higgins Fount India...it's the only way to fill it without having to change your clothes after.

Got both a blue and a black one in my Borealis Black. It's a great little pen. For me, it's a much better writer than the preppy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
