What's Your Favourite Diamine Ink?

Hi All,

Recently came across a shop that seems to sell the whole range of Diamine Inks! The smaller bottles are relatively cheap and I'm thinking of getting one or two. Any good recommendations?

Diamine Sapphire Blue & Imperial Purple are favourites of mine.

Diamine Ancient Copper looks good (just tried it) and the Monaco Red is growing on me (it's an iron ore red).

The Royal Blue & Majestic Blue are a bit plain to me, and the Sherwood Green is rather dry - at least it doesn't flow well in dry pens.

Where is this shop? I have to buy my Diamine through the post.

Ink choice largely depends on your goals. You may seek the pleasure of doodling with strikingly beautiful colors (Diamine Syrah). Or you may want your note to stand out among the others (Diamine China Blue). Also you may want to get a text that is comfortable for you to read afterwards. I mostly tend to pursue the latter goal. And find bright strongly saturated inks distracting. Hence I like Diamine Indigo for the main text. The name is deceiving. Color is far from indigo. It is a pale subtle blue-grey with a slightest hint of green. Surprisingly comfortable to read. I prefer it in pens with moderate flow. The second Diamine ink is the Golden-Brown. I use it for headers and markup of the text with coarse or italic nibs. It matches Indigo very well. I tried a couple dozens of Diamine inks and this pair is a certain favorite of mine among them. In general Diamine are very nice. Despite of your goals I am sure you will be able to choose appealing colors among ones they offer.

Steel blue, peach haze, Kelly green.

Syrah, ancient copper, eu du nil,

Diamine has one of the most diverse colour ranges of any of the major ink producers. I think only Noodlers has more. You are sure to find something that appeals.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

I have three Diamine inks: Ancient Copper, Twilight and Midnight Eclipse. Of those, Ancient Copper is my favorite, both for its color and performance on a variety of paper types.

I love Carnation, from their flower set, but of the normal line, I use Denim, Sargasso Sea, Matador, Ochre, Sepia, Eau de Nil, Amaranth, Asa and Evergreen the most. They are all great, though Sargasso has slightly more maintenance issues than the others.

Another vote for Denim. I also like some of the Flower inks; have not yet actually tried them all, and was underwhelmed by the color of Tulip (not my cup of tea) but Carnation, Aster, Bougainvillea and Cornflower are quite nice, and Burgundy Rose isn't bad. Also really like Eclipse for an almost black blue-black color, and And Emerald is probably my most favorite green ink on the planet; a lot of greens just don't hit me the right way -- they're either too teal-tinged or too yellow or just plain too bright -- but Emerald is the PERFECT color green, IMO.

Sargasso Sea is starting to grow on me a bit (after letting it sit in a corner for over a year) -- like the color but it is fairly finicky.

I fear you have asked a question and got many more answers than perhaps you bargained for.

Perhaps you need to start with your favourite colours, or ones that you already have and work from there.

There is no good answer to the question. The good thing is you cannot go wrong with any Diamine ink. I have never been disappointed with with either color or flow in any pen I've used it in. Buy as much as you can afford.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
