Mass Drop - Discount Online Pen Vendor

Just found an awesome site so I thought I'd share...

Check out https://www.massdrop.com/

It has very cheap pens and writing accessories under the "Writing" tab.

They buy in bulk from the retailer and sell to the consumer for much cheaper depending on how many people join the drop to buy the product.

They just expanded their pen offerings, and consumers can vote on which products will be offered.

I'd be surprised to find a better online pen vendor - the discount is typically around 20-50% from what I've seen. Has anyone here ever used massdrop? I'd love some feedback before I buy.

I got a few of those stick-on pen holders for my journal from them a couple of months ago. I notice that the prices there are usually a little less than what you might pay at a store or online dealer, but usually not by a lot. And it because it takes some time to gather up the people to complete the "drop", then make arrangements with the vendor, the shipping time often doesn't make the savings worth it to me. Not always...just often.

Watch the "Market Watch" forum. I think there's been two Lamy 2000 drops in Makrolon and two in Stainless Steel in the last three months. Pilot Metro drops, Iroshizuku drops. Rotring mechanical pencils. Lots of things.

Not sure the buyer is that dialed in, but the selections are made by voting by the members, and they they try and go get the deals. Not every deal can be had - Apple rarely negotiates sales, for instance - so it isn't always the first choice that comes up.

It's a very tempting place.

Really? First post and you pop in here to recommend we all get on Massdrop. Not only that, from the coloring on my screen monitor, I can see the text is a cut and paste...

Hi-ho, hi-ho, for referral-fishin' we a-go!

PS: Save yourselves while you still can, before getting sucked into the vortex. You don't necessarily *need* that tube headphone amp. Or a third Lamy2000, or that sweet little pen pouch.

I went "Huh?" and then went back and looked -- the color change is very faint, but it is there. Cool. I've learned my one thing for the day -- I can go back to bed.

Have bought a pen (Lamy 2000) from Massdrop before. Worked as advertised. Good, not great, price. Had to wait for full order to drop, so didn't get the usual instant gratification you get from other vendors (read Amazon) when you order one day and receive the next. I agree with the comment that the buyer at Massdrop seems to have their pulse on pen community. Overall a good experience - will order again.

Indeed a topic like this should be in Market Watch. I have moved it there.

But the OP could have saved himself the trouble, as our members have found Massdrop. There are several topics about Massdrop sales going.

Yup, looks like OP just wanted people to sign up via their referral code. Not so sneaky. I have ordered two pens from Massdrop, a Pilot Falcon and a Lamy 2000 (for $105, down from the $220 I would pay at Canadian retailers!) and it looks like it'll generally take a month or so between ordering and receiving the pen. A little frustrating, but if you're willing to be patient the discount can be worth it.

(There have been shadier drops in the past where there really isn't a discernible discount and it looks like they're taking advantage of people new to FPs... eg: the 3-ink Edelstein/J. Herbin/Iroshizuku "premium ink" bundle that wasn't really discounted and had something like "Now that you've got your first fountain pen..." in the blurb).

I use the Library theme and it really shows up when a cut and paste job has been posted - bright white against beige? ecru? Whatever the actual color is.you can't mss it.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and you will see a button with a few options, one of which is "change theme." There are three options: what you see now, the mobile version of the same and Library. It's just a skin that enhances the appearance of the network.

Good catch on the referral code, it has been removed.

Back on topic (even if it was spammy!)

Massdrop was hiring a Buyer for writing implements and I was (briefly) considering applying for the position.

They were very specific that the right person needed top be very active in the pen community, and listed a couple specific boards and subreddits that the candidate should have an existing presence on.

*edit - here's the listing.. https://www.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/23317614

Interesting. Flattering for FPN to be named specifically.

Of course, we ARE the largest independent pen board in the world.

And you guys and gals make it that way!!! Well done.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
