I was thinking an AM (the orange and brown is striking, but he knows my taste, if there is another color combination that he thinks I'll like better), a clear JT, a JB, and a JBD in any color but black.

Have him contact FPN user "mesu" and order some Deccans. Among the best Indian pens, IMO.

He can also perhaps order some customs from Ranga - or use the trip as an opportunity to give Mr Kandan some Jowo nibs, and have a pen built around those nibs. Their workshop is a couple of hours away from Chennai, a fairly inexpensive cab ride.

True bliss: knowing that the guy next to you is suffering more than you are.

Dave- please tell your son to try out the local foods of Chennai. The Idli and Masala Dosai available in Chennai is very good, heavenly, in fact. I miss finding good South Indian restaurants here in Michigan.

Oh, given what he's there for, I doubt that he will be missing any meals, and I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, of those meals will be local cuisine :D

Hey, don't forget to show us your haul ;)

There wasn't any haul. He said that all the GEM store had was Indian Parkers.

Now he may be telling me a story because he's wanting to give the "haul" for Christmas. But for now I got nathinga.

My son was telling me a fib. Here's what was in a little package that I got from him:

post-112166-0-41920000-1419478612_thumb.jpg

It's not branded, but the coloration, the single ring around the jewel, and the double ring at the bottom of the cap make it look like a Gama. However, the Gama clips are straight, while this clip looks like a faux Parker. The nib is gold (or gold plated) and engraved with the words "OLYMPIC TIPPED FINE." It is a genuine fine-point, and it writes NI-I-ICE! :D

Edit: The picture looked a lot better on the back of my camera :(

My son said that someone gave it to him so he'd have something to bring back to me. It needed a thorough flushing, but now it write great. Nice fine-point nib.

One of the denizens on the FPN Facebook page posted a picture of a Guider that's a close match, except for the clip. Perhaps the previous owner had replaced the straight Guider clip with the Parker-ish clip. Anyway, here in the States it's pretty rare

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
