Inky T O D - If Your Ink Collection Were Gone Tomorrow, What Would You Buy Again?

One night, the naughty elves (they were banished from Toy Land a generation ago) sneak down the chimney. They eat all the cookies, open all the presents, and play with all your pens. Only your inks are missing. Every ink bottle is GONE. Your significant other does not believe you, and asks if you are going to blame your imaginary friend next. You protest that Fred is innocent. No one believes you. Finally, you send a note to Santa asking for him to send his crack team of investigators to the scene to determine that you are in fact, NICE. Santa is too busy this time of year to do the investigation, so he submits your claim to the North Pole insurance company under a theory of employer liability.

You receive a check for the exact amount to replace your ink in exactly the same condition (so if you had 1/4 full bottle of Parker Penman, that's what would be replaced). Assume you could actually replace those hard to find vintage gimborn bottles.

So, now you are in a dilemma .... what do you do? Do you replace your collection as it was, or do you replace only your favorites and buy new stuff.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'd replace my favourites and try new inks. You never know- the new inks you try may become your new favourites!

Noodler's Black, Pelikan Konigsblau, Montblanc Honore de Balzac, and Noodler's Apache Sunset would need to be replaced. As for the rest, who knows with all the options out there.

I thought Halloween was over - this is a frightening scenario.

There are no vintage inks in my collection, but there are several Organic Studio inks that can't be replaced. I'd certainly get the crucial ones:

- Noodler's Apache Sunset

- Akkerman #29

- Private Reserve Ebony Blue

- Noodler's Black

- R&K Salix

- Organic Studios Edgar Allan Poe

After that, I'd probably be tempted to stray into some new acquisitions.

I'd start by replacing my favorites: Iroshizuku, Sailor, and Mont Blanc. I'd then take the difference and start exploring iron galls, Akkerman, and some of the other smaller brands of inks.

I like questions like this because they force one to think in terms of essentials, revealing what is important to the individual, and this of course can vary widely from person to person. I would replace MB Royal Blue and Mystery Black immediately and enjoy the space created for a while. Then, in future, if the urge hit to use another colour, I'd think about what at that time.

I'd rebuy Noodler's Eel Red Rattler, J. Herbin Orange Indien, Namiki Blue, Pelikan Brown, Diamine Florida Blue and maybe Diamine Orange and Noodle's Apache Sunset too. I seem to be in an Orange phase right now. :)

Kung Te Cheng

Bad Belted Kingfisher

Baystate Blue

Bulletproof Black

I'd be OK just replacing these and then using the rest of the cash to buy another pen.

Probably about 2/3's of my ink that I would not repurchase. Live and learn.

I would replace every and each one of my ink bottles... and my samples too. I don't keep ink I don't like.

I usually give it away (to my in house artist to use, or to friends to play with) or trade with someone for other ink. ;)

I'd replace them all, but since the dollar-yen exchange rate is now more favorable I'd also buy more with the excess.

I would replace my favorites and then pocket the difference. I have a lot of inks, and while I have enjoyed them all, there are many I would choose not to buy again.

I would replace all the bottles I have. They work fine in one pen or another, so none are duds.

It is the samples that I have colors that I don't care for.

There are a few I would replace with something else, but not a lot. I have found that even an ink that I was not originally impressed with often grows on me as time goes by :).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
