How To Convert A Husky Tool Box Into A Pen Storage Box?

As the title is the question, I was wondering how should I convert it? I read about how some people used Ikea Ice Trays and inserted them into the trays of the lower part of the toolbox.

Also, do you think I should line it with velvet or some sort of fabric to stop the pens getting scratched?

Thank You,

Hi C D

I have repurposed a number of boxes to hold fountain pens, My preferred method is to make trays to hold the pens that fit inside the drawers, it makes it easier to make use of deeper drawers.

There are a couple of suppliers in the USA who have ready made liners for trays available Pendora pens is one and I think GoPens is another they are ready covered and would make it quite easy to get good results.

Best of luck with your project please keep the updates coming

Michael

Speaking of updates, I have a few actually.

Update 1 of Today

http://imgur.com/hWQowQV

Managed to create a bit of organization, used a old wrench holder converted into a small pen stand holding my pens.

Also, managed to organize my 2 ink bottles on the top level.

Update 2 of Today

I noticed that the only way the Parker Quink bottle and Lamy bottle would fit in the top level, is to put them all the way closes to the latch. So I afraid in the future, I might not be able to store ink bottles in the top level as they will stop the lid from shutting... Does anybody know if Monteverde Bottles are big, or they are small and wide on the bottom?

Still Needed:

Pen Trays (hopefully acquired by the Christmas)

More Pens (to fill those pesky empty drawers :P)

More Ink!!!

I wonder if removing the grey tray on the top would allow more space for ink bottles

I would if i could, they are bolted/hammered in. As in the bolts for it can't be remove, like they have a flat-top. Also, remove it would effect the rigidity of the latch.

I have a similar Husky tool box for my pen stuff, but without the grey tray, so most pen bottles can fit in the upper part.

The Ikea ice trays are OK as long as you only have thin pens like Esterbrook J or Pelikan 400.

You can get pen trays from various sources (try gopen.com) and cut them to size.

Wish you luck!

The grey foldoning tray is likely riveted in at the 4 hinge points. If you drill out the rivets on the box (not the tray), the tray wil pop right out. If your careful, you will just be left with a couple of small holes in the side that will hardly be noticeable.

Good luck. Cant wait to see the finished work.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I can't do that because the box isn't really mines, and my dad just lent it to me for the mean time. Also, I'm planning to purchase a lawyer-desk drawer type of thing, which I hope to find in a estate sale.. But anyway, thank you for your opinions and answers.

If you have a harbor freight near by, I would try one of these.

It is a nice wood box, relatively inexpensive and on sale as well. If I can get down to watertown in the next little while, it is on my shopping list.

Very nice chest, especially for $80. While it isn't a Gerstner, I think it would work well for pens and inks. May have to put the bug in my wife's ear for Christmas.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
