Richard Binder No Longer Sells Toledo M700, Is Something Up?

For some reason, the Toledo M700 has been removed from Richard Binder's Pelikan page. Farhney's is also out of stock on the M700. (However, Goldspot has it in stock.) Did something happen with the Toledo?

Well, Mr. Binder is in the process of closing up his retail business so I can imagine that once he sells out of a high end item he is unlikely to restock with the end in sight.

Do you have more details? What will be his remaining business?

They also no longer sell the M200. That's surprising, but then again, the M200 has always been popular as a high-quality entry-level fountain pen.

This form the most recent Nib Noise just a couple days ago:

We will have our entire remaining stock of pens pens and accessories with us at the Ohio show, for prices that will be significantly reduced even from our usual marked-down show prices. These reduced prices will carry through to our site when we reopen it on November 12. If you see something you want, do not wait, buy it now. This is it, this is all we have.

*** Retail Closing Down ***

------------------------------------------------------------------------

As noted above, we are closing down our retail sales of pens and accessories. As our current stocks sell out, we will not be restocking these items. Most of the accessories we no longer carry can be found at

Indy-Pen-Dance:

http://www.indy-pen-dance.com/

* Even after our pen and accessory sales are gone, there will still be the Pen Show Tray and Barbara's Attic Tray.

* Also after our pen and accessory sales are gone, we will still have nibs for an indefinite time, and we'll keep the NIBARAMA page running for as long as it makes sense to do so.

* We will still attend -- and work at -- several pen shows every year.

Our next show after Ohio will be the Philadelphia Pen Show, in January.

The larger point, as announced a little while ago in Nib Noise, perhaps also on his Web site, is that he and his wife are approaching their seventies and would like to reduce their commitments. Richard plans to continue writing about pens, for publication on richardspens and I suppose elsewhere.

People at that age do wonder what they'd really like to do with the time remaining. Retail seems not to have been the most attractive answer.

Richard has already cut back on his repair business and gotten out of selling his own brands of pens and ink. I'm approaching eighty, as are many people I know, and the feeling is familiar.

I understand now. He will still be active as a nibmeister. Good for him to be able to reduce his activities and still stay in the hobby.

Okay, so this has nothing to do with the Toledo itself. I've never heard of Indy-Pen-Dance before, and I find it surprising he's directing customers there. At least Binder will continue to make custom and modified nibs...

Not surprising at all as he trained them.

On the remaining Pelikan pens, especially if you are in the US ( shipping only $10), you can get some great deals while he has stock....

That may be but a M400 with a Binderized m400 nib for $250 plus shipping, hard to find a better deal now or probably ever in the future. I am just frustrated that he does not have an M600 in stock.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
