Aurora Optima Vs Sailor Pro Gear Realo - Any Compartive Shots?

I have an Aurora Optima and am beginning to really like the size and shape. Sailor pens are rare in Oz so I can't get a comparison. Anyone have both and can post photos?

I own a regular-sized converter-filled Pro Gear, and handled an Optima at the Melbourne Pen Show this morning. While I can't talk to the piston-filled version of the Pro Gear, which I expect would be a little larger & heftier, I was very impressed with the Aurora. So much so that it very nearly parted me from my money.

The Aurora felt comparatively more substantial in my hand in terms of weight, nib, and fit & finish (it was the blue auroloide model). The flared section was particularly comfortable to hold. The section on my Pro Gear isn't bad in any way, but the Aurora was better.

I suspect there will be an Optima in my future.

I hope that helps.

What time were you there? I bought the Aurora from Guido as well but a month or so ago. It's with him now for a minor tweak. I compared the two as well and the Sailor was just a bit too short in comparison, a bit thinner as well. Had I not held an m800 (something on my list now), I would have probably come home with another Optima or 88.

Edit: I have the blue auroloide with chrome trim and a factory stub :cloud9:

I've been wondering about this as well. I have a pro gear (not a realo though) that I love -- so much so I was thinking of a second. Then I saw an optima online. Anyone know where I might handle an optima in Melbourne (I couldn't make the pen show today, unfortunately). Melbourne folks, any ideas? I'd be more than happy to do a comparison.

I think Pen City have a few. Would be the best. Alternatively, rock up to the pen meetings and ask someone to bring one along. I haven't been to one yet but they have a thread in the meetings area.

Would be interested in this comparison too! I love everything about my Aurora Optima Minima but as I also really like Sailor Sapporos have long been thinking about getting a Realo ProGear. Initially I would think that the Realo would be lighter due to the materials used (i.e. not celluloid) but not sure how much the internal piston filler changes the weight compared to a normal ProGear?

Wish list: Aurora Optima

Current inked Pens: Pilot Decimo - Noodlers BBH, MB Mozart - MB Lavender

Pelikan M150 - Noodlers Kung te Cheng

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
