Inky T O D - Inks That Are Objectively Impressive

INKS THAT ARE OBJECTIVELY IMPRESSIVE .... What I mean by this are inks that are impressive not (necessarily) because of personal taste, but because their manufacturers managed to achieve something that's rare or even unique amongst inks.

Here's two that I consider impressive:

Sailor Irore ink : The only true red ink available on the market. For me the other reds are not true reds, not even the highly praised Sheaeffer red.

Sailor Kiwa Guro : One of the very rare inks that can be used on really bad paper without bleed-through.

My experience with inks is quite limited but I'm sure that there's quite a few impressive inks out there.

Kudos to Noodler for inks that have not budged when I've spilt lab reagents or cleaners on them. Eternal and bulletproof class inks impress me!

Seconded for Noodlers! Amazing technology coming from a solitary man's workshop, from Bulletproof to non-feathering to super-fast drying. BSB, with all its problems, is widely regarded as the most saturated and vibrant ink out there, but liking it is another story. And don't forget Blue Ghost and Whiteness of the Whale.

Aside from that. I find Platinum Carbon an impressive ink for being a pigment based formula with particles fine enough to be used in FPs.

I'll also throw in J. Herbin's 1670 inks for the same reason, albeit a bit more precious of pigments!

(I edited this to better answer why they're objectively impressive and not simply that I like them.)

10 years on PFN! I feel old, but not as old as my pens.

Hi,

Interesting question!

I think the introduction by Noodler's of cellulose-reactive inks was impressive, which gave us highly robust inks in colours not then available in the iron-gall [Registrars] inks. Yet the iron-gall inks are now being handcrafted in various hues, so we reap the rewards of those innovations too.

The introduction of nano particle inks was also impressive, but it seems to me there's more potential than what we've seen in the market.

Also the inclusion of 'bling' in aniline dye inks by Herbin is something different.

Then we have Noodler's Baystate Blue, which set a new standard for vibrant high-chroma colours: a Blue that is a screaming Orange-Red in mufti.

Bye,

Hello PatrickL, et al,

I also think Noodler's BSB is impressive to look at; so was Parker Penman Sapphire - that one really made an impression! (I still miss it). :(

Best regards,

Chris

Well, Platinum Carbon and Pigmented are which are impressed me, and probably others because its ability, although I would really welcome one in purple color, like Diamine Imperial Purple kind of color.

Well, I don't have Parker Penman, but there are a lots of fan of it...

I'm going to praise (again) my favorite ink, which is Kon-Peki. Because Iroshizuku made a blue that is not boring, yet you can use it at work or even on condolence notes. And the bottle is a work of art. So not-boring but widely useful? Oh, and it flows wetly, if that's what you like in an ink (I do like mine slightly gushy.) I have my bottle at work, where I can gaze on it, and I took a very pretty paperweight out of my collection (a gift from my late husband that I really love, from a trip we took) and the swirls look like the ink inside. A small vignette to make my office (which is in a windowless room) look pretty.

Objectivity in inks? You have to be kidding.

I'm with you.

Inks are entirely subjective.

Except when they are submissive (in my abusive experiments) and subversive when they are being sneeky (like when an ink pretends to be black until you really look at it).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Sandy, I like your recap of the ink changing events.

Let me say that when you write with BSB, Whiteness of the Whale or Blue Ghost, strangers and little kids will stop and oooh and aaahhh over your writings. People who know you, will just roll their eyes.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
