Pilot Custom Heritage 92's Have Landed (Part 1)

Good evening everyone,

A pair of CH92's I ordered on Amazon just arrived in the mail today. I have a third one that should arrive this week (stuck in customs). I'll make a more comprehensive post when that one arrives. These will be my last pens for awhile (famous last words, I know).

I decided to buy a full sized Pilot because I really liked the nib on my Pilot Stargazer but wanted something closer in size to a TWSBI 580. I contemplated getting a Pelikan M600 but with the price increases lately, I didn't feel like it was worth it right now to spend $300 on one pen. However, I ended up spending about that much on the 3 CH92's. Why 3?

I intended to buy just one of these, but I found a ridiculous deal on Amazon that I couldn't pass up. A Japanese vendor had the orange one for only $51 shipped (F nib) and the smoke one for $100 shipped (FM nib). So of course I ordered them expecting this was either a mistake or for my order to be cancelled. They only had one of each listed and their other CH92 pen prices were all over the board but much higher. But they shipped on time and arrived as expected. I was almost expecting to open the boxes to see some BIC pens in them or something. The vendor is well rated on Amazon, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. I will definitely give them a solid rating and review for their excellent shipping time and of course the amazing price.

They are indeed brand new and write wonderfully so far. Even on crappy paper, they are very smooth and lived up to my expectations. The F is noticeably finer than the FM and the FM writes a little smoother than the F. Both qualities are to be expected and both write fine enough for my smaller handwriting.

Without further ado here are some pictures. I'll post writing samples and more pictures when my blue CH92 arrives.

I have one with a SM nib in smoke. The nib is too smooth lol. I recommend this and the Lamy 2000 to anyone looking at a nice pen < $200. Excellent nibs, excellent value and a great design overall. Only wished they made a larger version with a #15 nib. That would be my ultimate pen everyday pen.

Edit: Is the FM one still available?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
