That looks authentic from the pictures. Most fakes have 9 rectangles on the barrel while the real one has 11 rectangles. _Stormin_ is correct on the model name.

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

It's missing one of it's black bands from the grip, but as Mister Mont Blanc says, at least it has 11 rectangles between clip band and grip. So it's a good start.

You need to look for the serial number. It should be impressed horizontally on the clip band next to the right hand side of the clip when you're holding it vertical and upright. It should not be on the clip itself and it should not start with 3 letters such as MDL or NDL.

Even if it has a correct looking serial number these pens are very frequently faked, and grade 7, exact replicas, are regularly produced. Even some boutiques might not be able to authenticate those.

Oh I didn't even open the pics to see the missing band. It looks like it was there to begin with and has an impression where it was. Not sure how that comes out unless it isn't glued in!

Oh, yep. This pen is most likely a decade or two old. It belonged to my grandfather who was a respectable pastor. I can see from comparing with this picture, http://www.caliberswiss.com/montblanc-starwalker-ballpoint-metal-rubber-platinum-w-twist-mechanism-8857/, that is is definitely missing that one band.

Thankfully, as I checked for the serial number, it starts with a IF2, so thats a good sign?

Is there some sort of warranty/repair policy or perhaps even a serial number check on the MonthBlanc databases to learn about this purchase?

If you sent it to be repaired, i.e. to have the missing band replaced, Mb would certainly check before they accepted it for work. There is no accessible customer database

However, if the pen were to have the band replaced, it would likely be a very affordable service, and at the same time verify the pens authenticity.

It would probably still cost the level one service

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
