Modified M1000

I bought this pen damaged, A little dog had used it as a very expensive chew toy.

The damage wasn’t too bad and I got a good deal on the pen.

With closer examination I discovered a crack in the green striped outer celluloid cover.

Now at this point the pen was completely functional, but it also offered a opportunity…..

I have always liked the hard rubber products made by American Art Plastics, and ordered a few , just in case.

Well last night, I was looking at the pen, and before I knew it the cover was off.

So what could I do, I had no choice, So I got on the lathe and made a new cover,

Red and Black hard rubber.

Well I’m not sure I like it, I need to get use to the different look.

So I’ll use it for a while and see if I warm up to it.

again, nice work!

Beautiful! I've never fully disassembled a M1000 before. Is the ink touching the body you made or did you just turn a cover for the pen (and the ink & piston still resides in the original tube).

Pelikan has a somewhat unusual way of making the pens.

They make the outer Celluloid cover separately, bore the inside and rough finish the outside.

The cover and section are put into a die and polycarbonate is injected. A draw pin in the die creates the internal cavity.

So there is a complete pen under the dressing.

The celluloid cover doesn't adhere to the polycarbonate. If split it will come off in a single shell.

There is some adhesion up by the section, but nothing that wont pop off.

So now you have a translucent green pen, The surface is uneven and the diameter varies due to the injection process.

The outer diameter was .508" I turned it down to .499 and cleaned up the transition to the section.

The .499" OD allowed me to use a .501 reamer on the hard rubber shell.

The outer shell is .550 OD at either ends and .570 OD on center. so I machined the rubber down to .600 OD, warmed up the rubber and press fit them

Machined the rest while running the pen on a mandrel to .570 and hand finished it from there.

Al in all not too difficult job.

The picture is the body, turned down and polished.

The results are excellent. At the moment there is a great void in aftermarket Binde making services for Pelikan pens, maybe you can fill it, there is a lot of demand I am sure.

Excellent work! I'm not sure that I like the color either but it is definitely nicely done:-)

I'm not usually a fan of custom bindes but that pen looks great. I'd be proud to use that. Enjoy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
