Why Do People Really Want To Hold Fountain Pens Upside Down?

I have let some people try my fountain pens, and they always hold the pen upside down until I tell them how to hold it. what I mean by upside down is with the feed pointing up.

why is this?

I experience the same strange phenomenon.

I see people rotating the pen. Maybe because they think it's okay to put your finger on the nib?

I've noticed this, it's baffling. Like I'm in some sort of nature documentary.

The Highlander was a documentary, and the events happened in real time.

if it was nature doc then it would be about the FPN community using the en at 101% correctly.

What's really amazing is when your pen actually writes upside down, then you don't have to explain anything. You can just have an inner chuckle.

No, don't own a 360. Wish I did though (another thing for my Santa list...he's going to get sick of me :) ).

I had an EVP borrow my Graf Guilloch to sign a contract real quick and he held it upside down. Still wrote great so, rather than correct him, I just smiled and said thanks.

One of my pens will run dry upside down.

My besides upside down writer is the P-C74-MS except right now because I'm using extreme dry ink in that pen.

I've had someone ask to use an EDC pen, try to write with it upside-down, then become upset with me when I corrected (kindly & quickly) the pen's orientation. Completely flummoxed.

And that will be my word of the day! Had to look that one up. :)

This made me laugh a little because it has happened to me more than once as well. I always thought it was fairly straight forward as to which side goes down! :P

It's like some sort of nature documentary and inner chuckles explain this topic perfectly

I actually just saw this within the last hour, pen worked fine and I was on the phone so I couldnt correct him. Ive also had someone borrow a pen and hold way too low and get covered in ink. She kept going not realizing it was leaking all over her. Then she got upset thinking she broke it.

I've only been using fountain pens for a few years, but at age 57, I must have seen plenty of images of people holding them the correct way, and I don't think it ever occurred to me to hold one with the feed facing up. Maybe it's not really that obvious to someone who has never seen one, but you'd think that some, at least would guess correctly.

Actually, the friends to whom I've lent some of my less valued pens have held them more or less correctly, just too steep an angle, usually. But then, these are people who became curious because they saw me using them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
