Sailor Pen - Sydney

Hi folks,

I am thinking about buying a Sailor 1911. Does anyone know where can I buy one for a good price in Sydney?

P/S: I have read a lot of reviews about this little boy, but I will be nice if you can feed in your personal experience with it.

Many thanks.

The only pen shop(s) I know of in Sydney that sell Sailors is the Pens de Luxe group - their 3 Pen Ultimate stores are located in the QVB (Town Hall), Chiffley Plaza (nr Circular Quay), and somewhere in North Sydney (http://www.pensdeluxe.ashop.com.au/g/26657/contact-us.html). According to their website you're looking at $540 for the 1911 Classic, or $340 for the 1911 Standard.

I have no idea whether that's a good price, but my general experience with Australian-priced brick and mortar stores (and most online stores too) is that the mark-up on their pens is massive. You'll pay up to twice the price (shipping excluded) - most of which (I suspect) is gouged out of the local stores by the Australian distributors.

I Have a 1911L Demonstrator with Rhodium trim and a F nib. Love the pen and the nib writes beautifully. Everything feels firm and secure. Cleaning is easy as the nib and feed easily comes out.

Ink hardly ever evaporates in this pen.

Hello,

I am probably a little late, however I'd like to say that if you don't mind online and can bear being patient ( Christmas soon so shipping will definitely take it's time), Ebay isn't too bad a place for a Sailor 1911.

Personally bought one on Ebay from japan, it was a Sailor 1911 Standard, with a Fine 21k Nib for approximately $160 aud. This was new and obviously the benefit of getting it from japan was the option for the 21k nib on a cheaper standard model. Now the pen is currently my most used pen especially when it comes to studying, a love the writing feel and fine lines when I'm rapidly and illegibly writing haha :)
Anyway obviously this is just my 2 cents and individual transactions and experiences may likely differ, however I thought I would just share my small experience here.

Best of luck with finding your pen.

Kind regards,

Yuki

Hi Yuki,

I found this page http://www.fountainpen-japan.com/menu4.html . They sell the

Sailor 1911 Large Gold 21K Fountain Pen

for 160 US Dollar. I was a bit suspicious about this incredibly low price. Can you please have a look? :)

If your buying from japan you are ensured of a lower price you may think of it as a steal but thas just how it goes... Your lowly 3776 century just costs 100USD in japan at the 100:1 yen:usd conversion if everything in e currency exchange is right Which begs the question why pay 60USD more if its not different when having to distribute locally in japan... IIRC the 3776 in US goes fot 160...

But again sailors are a bit more expensive becuase of the higher karat nib

Hey PINK_PANTHER,

My apologies for the not replying to you earlier,

To be honest if a site appears confusing I generally shy away just as a precautionary principle, however 160 is a price I have seen them online for so it is quite plausible.

Furthermore as I stated I bought mine off of eBay, that way I am more likely to receive my item safely as paying through Paypal generally offers some sort of buy protection in case the item is lost or broken. As of yet everything I have purchased off of ebay, from japanese based stores, have turned out to be exactly what I was hoping for. Examples would be the Sailor and 7 different Iroshizuku Inks, even my first MB FP funnily enough (this one being second hand)

However keep in mind I may have been simply fortunate. All in all just keep an eye out on ebay for things and you may find some pleasant deals.

Kind regards,

Yuki

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
