It's pretty much sold out everywhere until the next shipments in December (what many retailers are posting). I missed it by minutes at my favorite pen retailer. By "missed it by minutes," I mean that I opened the email when it came in, waited a few minutes to place my order while doing other things, and it was gone. Less than minutes after I got the email.

Probably the hottest ink of 2014, and that's a phrase that I never thought that I would say.

If the manufacturer change the formulation for the second batch, that would put the cat 😻 between the pigeons. Why such a small initial launch (IMHO)?

Why such a small initial launch?

It's a stroke of marketing genius. Since everyone loves it, its rarity makes the buzz that much greater. If it had fallen flat, they wouldn't have wasted too much money making the stuff.

This.

Just check your favorite retailers 'closeout' shelf - you'll see plenty of examples of inks that missed the target.

It's called creating demand. A lot of manufacturers are doing it, and it's getting tired.

Well I have to say it continues to be hard to find, though I got lucky today. I'm on the "tell me when you have it in stock list" at three US retailers and one came up trumps today - surprisingly because I thought it would be several weeks before it was back in stock. I jumped on the email and placed the order (probably within a minute of the notice coming in) and got a confirmation. I then immediately went back to their website to see if it was still available, and it was back to "sold out". So either one bottle got "restocked" or they really did sell out (again) in a couple of minutes... Still worried they'd email back and say "sorry", just kidding, but relieved to find I just got a tracking number... so I'm beginning to believe I'll have some of this to use by the end of the week.

There was one place that still has it but the shipping to Canada was way more than the item itself. I think I'll wait til December

If you're looking for it in Canada, Stylus Fine Pens in Edmonton says it will be back in stock before the end of the month, and they have reasonable shipping.

Jmccarty3 hit the nail on the head. When MB found Racing Green to be so popular they pulled the plug on it. Thus creating a rare collectible as supplies dwindled down. Now we are left with a slew of inks that are labeled as a "suitable replacement" for the beloved late Racing Green. They never are. The same genius (read ploy) was applied to Hitchcock, Jonathan Swift, and who knows how many more. And it’s probably not just MB. J Herbin is doing the same thing (calling it an "Anniversary" ink) with its Stormy Grey (the topic of this thread). I was told by my favorite brick-and-mortar that as soon as the Stormy Grey came in the door it went out the door. The LEs serve at least a dual purpose. Rarity creates demand thus “justifying” higher prices and they also don’t have to keep making it as a staple. If it proves to be a clunker they haven’t invested that much into the product and they can move on with their lessons learned. For the desperate and the unlucky must-have people they can always resort to eBay to slake their thirst.

Thanks for the explanation - at least I now know why I am losing my mind, and that I am in good supporting company.

For those who still want to try it out: I did a "pre-order" of the next shipment at Hyatt's, and they "estimate" that it will arrive in 2 to 3 weeks (early November?). We'll have to wait to see if it really is delivered that soon...

Both Laywines and Wonder Pens also said they might be getting some in early next month.

Wow, I thought I had initially missed the boat as the dedicated pen shops online had all sold out. I went on the great river retail website and they had a bunch, at the same prices, with shipping.

While I agree it may be some marketing with a limited release to generate buzz, I wouldn't worry they would discontinue this ink. The first two in the 1670 series continue to be made.

has anyone asked any retailers how many bottles they pre-ordered???? maybe they all failed to realize the demand this Grey ink would generate.

Call Larry Dromgoole, he probably has a few bottles... he's good at having hard to find stuff.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Craft breweries have been using this tactic for a long while (aka "anniversary" brews with limited number of bottles sold within hours). With threads like this, it really help people talking about their brand, and attract new customer for them. If it weren't for its rarity, I wouldn't have had more interest in this brand than most other.

It works very well for them.

Hey, we like the ink and fall for it and they aren't holding back a basic life commodity. I mean, as this specific ink states, they've been in business for a few hundred years. They make dozens of inks that are well liked... I'm pretty sure this ink was purposely made to cause a shortage.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
