Sad News: Conway Stewart Closes Down

Heart broken!

I am returning from my pen seller just now. I went to give my Conway Stewart 22 for sac replacement. He refused. It seems he can not send it across for servicing. Conway Stewart and Aurora has closed their production lines. It was a sad news.

The CS that made your 22 died years back, sorry you came to know of it only today.

BTW, maybe this is a good time to change your "informed" pen seller.

According to the Conway Stewart Web site:

"Sadly, Conway Stewart was put into administration on 28th August 2014 and has subsequently gone into liquidation.

The offices have been closed and the stock and machinery has been sold off.
Will there be another incarnation of this iconic but troubled brand? Who knows?"

I wonder who bought the stock and equipment ...

It was put on an auction type website a while back. There's a thread somewhere on FPN linking to that site - it still (or did as of a couple weeks ago) displays the many, many lots that CS's stuff was broken up into.

You are correct about Conway Stewart, but are grossly mistaken about Aurora!

Agreed.

Hmmm. I wonder if Mary Burke knew that was in the offing? I remember the thread where everyone was saying "Hey Mary! Why doesn't CS issue a "Doctor Who" FP to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the show?" and her being very cagey about a response. :(

Sad news indeed.

"Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?" Patrick Henry

Hello Everyone,

I hope Tryphon is correct about Aurora, (it sounds like he is :) ); I love Aurora's Black ink - in fact, it is my favorite black thus far - a deep, rich black with low maintenance.

Best regards,

Chris

Aurora is still here but Conway Stewart is indeed gone

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Didn't CS get a big write up in Pen World this month, or am I getting too old.

OP, while the latest incarnation of Conway Stewart has indeed gone out of business, that won't stop you from getting the sac replaced on your CS22. There are plenty of repairers around who undertake such work.

And if your pen store couldn't advise you about that, perhaps it is time to find another trusted source (as Hari has already suggested).

CS made some grand looking pens....at a price I could never afford.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
