Pilot Prera Without Logo On Cap (And Advice On Alternative)

I am the happy owner of a Pilot Prera (ivory). I received it as a gift. I never thought on buying one because I rarely buy anything than black or aluminium/steel... but surprisingly it has become is my everyday pen

 

I am thinking on buying a second one. Just thinking it twice because of the colors, which I hardly can find appealing...

 

Anyway, the story is that I have been browsing around and I have found a detail in my Prera that I have not seen elsewhere: it has no "Prera" logo printed on the cap. "Pilot Japan" is printed on the other side of cap, but definitely, the typical Prera logo is missing.

 

I am just curious. Is it something common... maybe from a particular edition?

 

As I am considering buying another (I found it at a very good price online), alternatives or suggestions of a similar quality pen (preferably black with fine nib) around £20/€25/$30 are very welcome as well, if someone have something in mind...

I know Pilot don't offer a black Prera, the closest would be a dark grey and a dark brown, neither of which are available through the official US channels, not sure about EU. The only Preras officially imported in the states are the transparent Iro-ai models, those have the Prera

logo, and a higher price than the solid colour models. The Pilot Metropolitan/MR/Cocoon has the same nib and feed as the Prera, is a bit less expensive, has a longer and heavier metal body but, alas, has a thinner section and a fairly large step between the section and the body.

Thanks Ned. Exactly, 100% agree. I think the section is the same that the one in the Pilot 78G, which I like. I really liked those models the first time I saw them but luckily I went to a pen shop instead of buying one online and immediately found that the step was too large for me...

 

The friend that gave me the Prera has one in dark brown. It is dark enough, and paradoxically, that's probably what I don't like... I have the feeling that I try to see it 'as black'... but constantly realising that is not black. The grey one is probably my favourite now, but thinking seriously to get the royal blue (I cannot explain why).

Hi Algester. I even thought that I could have managed to erase or remove it myself and forget about it, but there are no signs that the letters are faded or erased... and "Pilot Japan" is still visible quite clearly on the other side: all the letters are crisp and seem to have their original aspect. That's why my current hypothesis is still that the pen came without the logo...

The solid, or opaque versions of Prera DO NOT have the banded decoration that the usual, transparent Prera has.

 

In what I consider is a good aesthetic choice for these pens, only 'Pilot Japan' is printed on the side.

Both my Preras - ivory and lime green - do have 'Prera' printed on the cap.

I wouldn't mind a white or a brown one, and maybe a lime green for fun, but I prefer the gray, then the ivory. I dislike the decorations on the Iro-Ai version. The Prera colors are a bit too vibrant, they want to be modern and cool, slightly feminine in my opinion. But the gray one is pretty nice, it is that blueish kind of gray, if you know what I mean. I like blue, but I am afraid that the royal blue is too vibrant.

Yes, but the opaque ones still have a Prera logo on the cap, which is much more subtle but still present... I see know that probably my Prera is a rare case. I quite like it without the logo. Looks more formal. The logo itself is not terrible but looks too modern or sporty in my opinion.

 

I have a slate gray Prera and it does have the Prera logo. It is one of the few colors that I would own. I ordered another one in Ivory. I quite like the ivory I have. Specially because most of the times I write on paper of a similar color. Sometimes I think that an ivory/gold combination would have been fantastic...

 

I finally got the royal blue... I took the risky decision. With a color like this I can find myself loving it or putting it back into the box far from my sight. I am completing my master's dissertation and this is going to be my working pen. So the blue is going to be like the blue overall suit of a worker...

It's probably just an accident that it never got the Prera printing. If one were to try to peel or scrape it off, there'd be vestiges unless scrubbed really really well and probably repolished a bit.

 

Ivory and white are my favorites by far.

There were earlier version of the Prera that were only sold in Japan, but some have inevitably made their way onto the market. The iro-ais had different decorative cap bands and a solid colour top to the cap, as opposed to the translucent coloured cap tops now. They also had them in many more colours than are available now (purple, navy, etc). I think they were originally released to match the Iroshizuku inks?

I haven't checked the original solid colour versions to see whether they had the "Prera" logo on the cap. I really like the logo on the final version. I have the royal blue, light blue, dark pink, grey and dark brown solid colours.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
